- ItemCauses of Poor Performance in Mathematics in Universal Secondary Education Schools in Kakiri Sub-County, Wakiso District(Kampala International University, school of science with education, 2018-10) Amanya, DinahThe study investigated on the causes of poor performance in mathematics in universal secondary education schools in Kakiri sub-county, Wakiso district. The research objectives were; to find out how students’ home and family background can affect mathematics performance in Universal secondary Education Schools in Kakiri Sub-county, to assess attitudes of students towards mathematics in Universal Secondary Education Schools in Kakiri Sub County, to explore the attitude of mathematics teachers towards students of mathematics in Universal Secondary Education Schools in Kakiri Sub-County, to evaluate teaching methods used by teachers of mathematics in teaching Mathematics in Universal Secondary Education Schools in Kakiri Sub-County and to examine the resources used in the teaching of mathematics in Universal Secondary Education Schools in Kakiri Sub County. The study sample was 159 in which 150 were students, 6 teachers and 3 headteachers were selected from the population. The descriptive survey design was used and questionnaires, interviews and observation methods were used in the collection of data. Frequency and simple percentage were used in the analysis of the data. The findings of the study led to the conclusion that poor students’ family backgrounds, students negative attitude towards mathematics, anxiety and fear of mathematics, inadequate qualified teachers, poor teaching methods, inadequate teaching materials, overcrowded classes were some of the causes of poor performance in mathematics in the study area. The study also found out that developing positive attitudes motivation and proper guidance toward mathematics, using proper methods of teaching the subject, provision of relevant teaching material additional classrooms and furniture, provision of libraries and mathematical laboratories were some of the ways of improving performance of mathematics in the study area. Finally, the study recommended that frequent inter-school competition in mathematics, frequent supervision and inspection by the authorities as well as enlightenment of parents on the importance of children’s’ education should be adopted
