However, IE is not limited to only placement. Rather, it means facilitating education of pupils with Hearing impairment with a whole suite of provisions which include curriculum adaptation, adapted teaching methods, modified assessment techniques, and accessibility arrangements. In short, inclusive education is a multi-component strategy or, perhaps, a mega-strategy (Odom, et al., 2011).
- ItemAcademic performance of hearing impaired learners in regular school In Ijara District, Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2009-08) Aden, Abdi; AliThe impact of free primary education has been manifold and complex. The quality and magnitude of the programme has affected not only the normal physically fit pupil, but also the physically challenged learners in inclusive schools as well as the wider community and society. The study adopted a quantitative research design. This enhanced the researcher to obtain a better understanding of the problems and impact of free primary education on the quality of special education for the physically disabled learners in Garrisa district, Kenya. The method chosen allowed a collection of comprehensive and intensive data and provided an in-depth understanding of the topic under study. Information collected was analyzed and edited to create consistency and completeness. After collecting the questionnaires they were edited for completeness and consistency across the respondents and to locate omissions. Information obtained from the research study was presented and analyzed using narratives, and statistical figures. This repmt provides suggestions for more effective approach to physically disabled education in the country. It is designed for policy makers, plarmers and practitioners who have responsibilities in the area of physically disabled education in Kenya.
- ItemChallenges faced and academic performance of intellectually challenged learners in inclusive settings Nairobi Kenya.(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2008-08) Njoroge, Faith; W.Learners with mental retardation do not benefit from normal learning due to the challenges that they encounter. This study critically focused on these challenges and their academic performance in inclusive settings in Nairobi Kenya. The researcher adopted the quantitative approach of data collection from the target population. Teachers from public Primary schools were involved as respondents. Thirty teachers drawn from different primary schools responded to the questionnaires. Purposive sampling procedure was used to select the schools and the teachers. The researcher used questionnaires as data collection tools since all the respondents were literate. The respondents revealed that they face various challenges including lack of resource rooms, lack of reference materials and negative attitudes; these are caused by lack of funds, inadequate training of teachers, unmotivated teachers and learners. The researcher concluded the study by advocating for the working together of all the stakeholders in solving the problems faced by the teachers, in addition recommendations were made. They included: teachers handling learners with mental retardation getting training, availing of educational resources in all Schools and curriculum review and adaptation. All the intervention strategies laid out were meant to minimize the challenges faced teachers and learners.

- ItemEffects of poverty on the academic performance of learners in the selected primary schools of Central Division Kajiado District,Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2008-08) Kereku, SolomonThe purpose of this study was to establish the effects of poverty on pupil’s academic performance of the selected primarily schools in Central Division,Kajiado District Kenya. The specific objectives of the study were toinvestigate the relationship between the effects mentioned and academicperformance in Central Division, and to investigate the role of thecommunity in alleviating poverty and improving education in Central Division. The methods used for data collection was questionnaires to the staff members of the schools and students involved in the study. The findings were presented and interpreted in relation to the study objectives and research questions. While linking to the existing literature, results included demographic characteristics, frequency and percentages. Based on the findings it was observed that poverty affected the academic performance of students negatively. In chapter five, development of solutions to the problem, summary of the findings and conclusions were attempted. The findings suggested recommendations on areas pertaining to the provision of school facilities for students to learn well.

The Purpose of thls study was to investigate the factors affecting the performance in the selected schools of Central Division in Mwingi District. The specific objectives of the study were to determine if discipline affects the students' academic performance in the selected schools of Central Division, to determine if teacher qualities affect the students' academic performance in the selected schools of Central Division; and to determine if school facilities affect the students' academic performance in the selected schools of Central Division. The methods used for data collection was questionnaires and interview guides to students, teachers and head teachers of the schools involved in the study. In chapter four, the findings were presented and interpreted in relation to the study objectives and research questions. Based on the findings it was observed that teacher qualities, discipline of students; and school facilities have a direct impact on the students' academic performance. In chapter five, development of solutions to the problem, summary of the findings and conclusions were attempted. The findings suggested recommendations that the Government should provide more teaching learning facilities in schools to make the learning environment more attractive to students and teachers among other recommendations
