It was guided by three objectives; identify the relationship between child labour and academic performance of standard Eight learners, to identify the effects of child labour on academic performance of learners,, to establish the strategies used to curb child labour and improve academic performance. Stratified sampling was used where 60 respondents were selected. Among the strategies laid to curb child labour were: the need by government to provide scholastic materials to all schools, punishment to be minimized at school, there is need to sensitize the community about the urgency of education in the developing Kenya.

There has been controversial discussions mainly based on the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination. The main focus of this study was class 8 pupils who were admitted in class one in the year 2000, before free primary education program was implemented. The purpose of this study was to compare factors influencing the academic performance of public and private primary schools class eight in Nango Division Uasin-Gishu District. The main objective of this study was to investigate factors that contribute to the academic performance of private and Public Primary Schools. The second objective was to investigate the relationship between type of school and academic performance of Primary Schools Pupils. In addition if also investigates why some parents prefer private to public schools despite the free primary Education program in public schools. The research made use of simple random sampling to select three public and three private primary schools in Nango Division, Uasin-Gishu District.

College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2017-08) Kiggundu, Eden AlexDiscipline is a vital ingredient for the success of students’ academic performance. The Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Education (MOE) has always set up commissions of inquiries anytime the secondary schools unrest become a great concern, especially when it leads to massive destruction of property and death of students. The Ministry of education has always wanted to get to the bottom of the matter and establish ways in which discipline can be enhanced. However, discipline in secondary schools has deteriorated in the past few years, especially since the ban of Corporal Punishments goals and it assumed to hinder economic and industrial development (MOE 2012). In spite of efforts by the schools, discipline vices are the order of the day and it may be assumed that it hampers good academic performance. The schools have also been experiencing students ‘discipline cases. Although there are many factors that constrain the academic performance, the factor of discipline has not been conclusively looked in to. It was therefore important and urgent to have an in-depth assessment of the role of discipline on academic performance in order to solve the problem. In view of the above, the task of this paper is to assess the constraints of discipline, ascertain the relationship between students’ discipline and academic performance, find out challenges faced by teachers in dealing with students’ discipline and develop recommendations for improving discipline in secondary schools Bukomansimbi district, Uganda.
- ItemDomestic Violence and Academic Performance of Students (A Case Study of Tororo Municipality)(Kampala International University, School of Education, Open and Distance and E-learning, 2019-05) Awino, RoseThe researcher carried out research on impact of domestic violence on academic performance of students; a case study of Tororo Municipal Council. The objectives of the study were to find out causes of domestic violence on students’ academic performance and find methods which should be used to reduce domestic violence. The research designs used were both qualitative and quantitative. Questionnaires were used to collect data from respondents. Teachers and students were sampled to provide information required. They were 75 altogether. A purposeful sampling technique was used to choose respondents. Data was analyzed, recorded and presented in frequency tables. The conclusion was made, that domestic violence is mainly caused by; people who take toxic drugs and alcohol, undisciplined children, poverty, fighting for family property, gender roles and discrimination cause domestic violence. Parents who cheat each other and come home from work very late also cause domestic violence. Domestic violence affects academic performance because both teachers and students extend their indiscipline to school situations. Applying gender sensitive policies, guidance and counseling, introducing tight laws, taking toxic drugs, practicing assertiveness, introducing policies against gender discrimination, parents understanding their roles will reduce domestic violence. The following recommendations were made; parents should be free to share their feelings with each other. To reduce domestic violence, gender discrimination, alcoholism drug abuse should be fought to reduce domestic violence.
- ItemEffect of HIV/Aids on Academic Performance of Secondary School Students in Kabarole District. A Case Study of Kibiito Sub-County(Kampala International University, College/School of Education, 2017-08) Bukenya, AliThe effect of HIV/AIDS on secondary school students in Kibiito sub-county Kaborole district. The research adopted a case study design targeting a number of 4 schools. The Centre has four secondary schools both public and private. The researcher employed purposive sampling technique. The data was then analyzed using percentages, pie charts, tables, bar graphs and frequency distribution techniques using SPSS Version 16. The study established that Students with HIV/AIDS have challenges ranging from absenteeism occasioned by their attendance to medical care as well as caring for their aging and ailing parents. This eventually forces them to drop out of school when their parents die. The study recommends that Students living with HIV/AIDS should be supported by the government through provision of free secondary school education to ease the burden on parents. Child headed families should be eradicated by identifying orphans and initiating consultation development funds to help them with bursaries to eradicate poverty.
- ItemEffects of A Ban on Holiday Teaching on Academic Performance in Secondary Schools in Tororo Municipality(Kampala International University, College/School of Education, 2018-12) Alado, PheibeThe study sought to establish the effects of ban on holiday teaching on academic performance in secondary schools in Soroti Municipality. This study aimed to establish the effect of abolishing holiday teaching on academic performance in secondary schools, students’ perception of the ban on holiday teaching practice and identify strategies schools have adopted to offer remedial classes in secondary schools in Soroti Municipality. The research method adopted was descriptive cross-sectional research design using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The researcher used sample of senior three students, teachers and head teachers answer sample size of 175 respondents. Quantitative data analysis was done using descriptive statistics and Pearson chi-square tests at a 0.05 level of significance. The questionnaires and interview guide were the data collection instruments. The study found out that the ban on holiday teaching tuition did not negatively affect academic performance in secondary schools in Soroti Municipality. The study established that holiday teaching was stressful; most students had little interest in it and could fatigue them. The study established that holiday teaching was a strategy for syllabus coverage. It was therefore recommended that: the MoE&S strengthens its surveillance team to prevent the practice, the MoE&S strongly and impartial enforces the policy on holiday teaching practice, and the MoE&S gives a circular to head teachers identifying general strategies for remedial classes for all schools to observe in the teaching time, that there is need to reduce syllabus content to manageable levels.
- ItemThe effects of domestic violence on children’s academic performance in primary schools: a case study of Makindye Sub-County Kampala District(Kampala International University.College Of Education, 2009-10) Halimah, NamutebiThe purpose of the study was to explore the effects of domestic violence on children ·s Academic performance in primary schools. The study was conducted in Makindye cubcounty, Kampala district. The researcher collected dat& from parents, children and police officers, self administered questionnaires, guided interviews and observation were the basic instruments. The collected data was tabulated and analysed comparing percentage number of the respondents for the variable under investigation. The findings revealed that domestic violence is often linked to poor self- esteem. A child growing up in a violent home is likely to have little self worthy. Children in homes where domestic violence occurs are witnesses to abuse, may themselves be abused and also suffer harm "incidental" to the domestic abuse and are used by the batterer to manipulate or gain little control over the victim. Other factors included drug or alcohol abuse, loss of wage earning power and so many others. The study findings also revealed the effects of domestic violence on children as academic problems, agitation. aggression. fear of natural exploring, feelings of not belonging, general emotional distress and low self -esteem. In view of the above findings. the following conclusion can be made. If a child expresses a desire to talk. he or she should be provided with opportunity to express his or her thoughts and feelings. They should also be encouraged to write in a journal, draw or paint as these are all viable means for facilitating expression in young children. No one should be afraid to report a case of domestic violence. It is everyone· s business when someone is being abused. neighbors. teachers, doctors and clergy all need to be aware and report suspicious activities. If someone confides that they are being abused. listen with a supportive. non-judgmental ear never be afraid to contact the appropriate authorities.
- ItemEffects of drug and substance abuse on academic performance among secondary schools, Bunyangabu District,Uganda(Kampala International University ,College of Education, 2019-04) Kato Julius, MpangoDrug and substance abuse threaten and tends to derail these noble strides by demotivating the students in learning and subsequently ruining school going children that the government intends to rely on in driving the economy to the next level. Despite the overwhelming intervention strategies by the Government, religious organizations, non-state actors and many other keen stakeholders to curb the problem of drug and substance abuse especially among the youth, the number of schools going youth being suck into drug abuse seems to be escalating day by day. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of drug and substance abuse on participation in learning among secondary school students in Bunyangabu District in Uganda. The study used descriptive survey design combining both qualitative and quantitative research strategies. The research targeted all the form three students and their respective school principals in the 12 secondary schools in Bunyangabu District, six schools constituting 30% of the 12 schools in Bunyangabu District were sampled. Purposive sampling was used in the selection of the nine schools and their respective principals. From each selected school, 20 Form three students were selected using systematic sampling. Questionnaires were used for data collection. Once data was obtained from the field it was coded and analyzed by computer using a statistical software SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences). On basis of the findings, the study concludes that all the principals had experienced cases of drug abuse by students in their schools. Majority of the principals (60.5%) kept records of those students engaging in drug abuse. The study concluded that most of the schools offered guidance and counseling to the students and that most of the students had attended guidance and counseling against drugs in their schools. Alcohol was the frequently abused drug in the schools as expressed with a mean of 2.632. The study concluded that drug abuse among the students caused dropping out of school, strained relationship with other students, lack of interest in studying, low concentration span and declining grades. The study concluded that anxiety, headache, feeling sleepy, confusion and vomiting were serious effects of drug abuse among students and that the students have friends who take drugs. The study recommends that all schools should set up guidance and counseling offices facilitated by professionals to counsel students who indulge in drug abuse. Parents and teachers should discourage students and be firm in ensuring that the students do not take alcohol which is the most abused in the schools. The parents should also ensure they do not give so much money to their children and if they do so they should ensure that the money is put into constructive use.

Determine if Lack of enough Trained Teachers affects the implementation of free secondary education. Determine if high Pupil-Teacher Ratio affects the implementation of free secondary education. Determine if poverty level of parents affects the implementation of free secondary education. The instruments used for data collection were questionnaires which were administered to the staff members of the schools who were involved in the study. Findings were presented and interpreted in relation to the study objectives and research questions. While linking to the existing literature, results included demographic characteristics, frequency and percentages. Based on the findings it was observed that free primary education had been affected as regard to the quality of education. In chapter five, development of solutions to the problem, summary of the findings and conclusions were attempted. The findings suggested recommendations on areas pertaining to the making a policy that ensures that the quality of education is not compromised.

It was recommended that both the parents and the community should be sensitized on the importance of proper and stable family background and how they influence child development Parents should make sure that they provide food for their children as they go to school so that they do.

Indeed shortage of school facilities is an issue of contention capable of crimping the future of a cadmic and the entire education sector given the effects of which have seen total crumbing of school across the country. The study was based on two variables academic performance and school facilities. The relationship between the two is tangible is one leads to the other that is school facilities determine academic performance. The report therefore traces the impact of shortage of school facilities on academic performance. The way, in which it affects, what leads to the shortage of school facilities, the degree of effect it has on the performance as well as the relationship between the two. All these are discussed in the different chapters of the report including drawing insight in the way the study was conducted and the different ways the data making up this report was collected. The study managed to establish that shortage of school facilities was a big on academic performance as enhanced in chapter four and five and even the way of life of the students, the atmosphere/academic arrangement viewed in absence of enough classrooms. Attending lessons while standing, lack of first grades, under scores in exams, low concentration among others. As a result, recommendations are outlined by the researchers on how best government and other stake holders can overcome shortage of school facilities on academic performance in secondary schools.

The specific objectives among which were; To find out the relationship between English language and academic performance, to find out the effect of English language on academic performance. And to find out other factors affecting academic performance. The study environment was at Matagaro Secondary School, Ogembo Division, Gucha District, Kenya. The study found out that the school lacked adequate qualified teachers, teachers were not committed to duty, school administrators were not co-operative, teachers used mother tongue to teach, etc. The study recommended the government to train more teachers, equally the government should staff officers to organize workshops and refresher courses for teachers, the government and is asked to pay teachers well and teachers are asked to use student friendly teaching approaches. In conclusion . teachers, stakeholders, parents, students and other opinion leaders and shapers are called upon to take charge of education development to see to it that standards of Matagaro secondary are upheld in regional and national spheres.

- ItemFactors Affecting Academic Performance of Undergraduate Students at Uganda Christian University: Case Study College Of Education Open And Distance Learning(Kampala International University. College of Education,open distance and e-learning., 2017-08) Najjengo, Milly.This study was designed to investigate the factors affecting academic performance of undergraduate students of Uganda Christian University (UCU). Emphasis was put on trying to establish the relationship between admission points, parents’ social economic status, former school background and academic performance of undergraduate students at Uganda Christian University. The study employed the use of correlation design to establish the nature of the relationships. The validity and reliability of research instruments was established and data was collected from 340 respondents selected from all the six faculties of Uganda Christian Univer sity using the simple random sampling method. To analyze the data, the Pearson product moment correlation statistical tool was used with the aim of establishing the relationship between students’ admission points, parents’ social economic status, former school background and academic performance of undergraduate students at Uganda Christian University. This formed the basis of the detailed analysis and conclusions and recommendations. The findings revealed the existence of a significant relationship between students’ A’ level and Diploma admission points and academic performance, but there was no relationship between mature age points and academic performance. The findings also revealed that there was a significant relationship between parents’ social economic status and academic performance and a significant relationship between former school background and academic performance. On the basis of the findings, the researcher made the following conclusions; A’ level and diploma admission points are the most objective way to select just a few students from a multitude of applicants for the limited spaces available at universities in Uganda. Parents’ social economic status is important because parents provide high levels of psychological support for their children through environments
- ItemFactors affecting the academic performance of a girl child in a single sex secondary school. case study of Gamatui Girls Secondary School Sipi Sub-County Kapchorwa District.(Kampala International University ,College of Education, 2019-03) Chekwurui, IsaacThe study was on an assessment of factors affecting the academic performance of a girl child education in single sex schools. It investigated the perceptions of girls in single sex schools, the learning challenges facing girls in secondary schools, which discussions where statistical methods and matching of information were employed as tools for data analysis. Findings have shown that girl’s perceptions include; increased confidence, decreased relationship with boys and feel more comfortable in sharing ideas. General challenges facing boys include, poor relationship with family, drop out of schools and early marriages. Ways to improve girl’s performances include; making sure girls are safe, eliminating gender bias and provide pocket money. It was concluded that single sex schools are a good idea, particularly Conducive environment for study. It was recommended that, Educating women and a girl child in particular is a very important for any national to develop and therefore should strictly be emphasized.
