- ItemAn update on Monkey pox in Africa(International Journal of Current Research in Medical Sciences, 2023) Abdulwasiu Oladele Hassan; Toluwalope Esther Omojola; Abolaji Tolulope Adeyemo; Emmanuel Ifeanyi ObeaguMonkey pox is a re-emerging viral zoonosis that occurs naturally in heavily forested regions of West and Central Africa. Monkey pox was first identified as a distinct illness in 1958 among laboratory monkeys in Copenhagen, Denmark. Inter-human transmission of monkey pox virus, although limited, drives outbreaks, particularly in household and health-care settings. But the available evidence suggests that without repeated zoonotic introductions, human infections would eventually cease to occur. Therefore, interrupting virus transmission from animals to humans is key to combating this disease. The first documented cases in humans was in 1970, in six unvaccinated children during the smallpox eradication efforts. It has largely been believed its epidemiology was masked by smallpox transmission and the eradication of smallpox in 1977 brought the disease to prominence. Monkey pox is manifested by fever, headache, muscle pains, shivering, blistering rashes, swollen lymph node etc. The period of exposure to onset of symptoms ranges from 5-21 days and duration of symptoms is typically 2-4 weeks and symptoms ranges from mild to severe and can occur without any symptoms. One of the setbacks observed in Africa is limitation in data collection with reference to monkey and underfunding of Monkey pox Research. There is gap in knowledge and the preventive measures utilized aren’t emphasized and the citizens are not well oriented about the disease. This seminar gives an insight into the History and various studies conducted by outstanding researchers. It explains terminologies, and review concisely previous study relevant to monkey pox in Africa and Nigeria. It also delineates the various Diagnostic methods, Virology, Epidemiology, Clinical features, Pathogenesis and Pathology, Treatment, and Preventive measures utilized so far.
- ItemAssessment of the Problems Associated with the use of Public Latrine System in Ife-North Local Government, Osun State, Nigeria(Newport International Journal of Research in Medical Sciences, 2024) Emmanuella Ogechi Onyeaghala; Esther Adebanke Maxwel; Emmanuel Ifeanyi Obeagu; Abdulwasiu Oladele HassanPublic toilets are an essential means of sanitation in some developed countries and have been the only possible alternative for many people living in low-income, heavily populated, and informal settlements. The aim of this study was to assess the problems associated with the use of public latrine system in Ife-north local government, Osun State. The data used for the study were obtained through well-structured questionnaires. A total of 181 questionnaires were distributed and 150 questionnaires were retrieved, while 31 questionnaires were missing. The respondents were selected randomly for the study. The descriptive statistics showed that male respondents were the major participants in this study. 80% of the respondents in the study area had access to public toilet. The respondents identified Sit latrine as the major type of latrine system available in the area. This study revealed that majority (40.66%) of the households used the latrine every day and the latrine was being maintained properly by the community. The result of this study showed that 86.66% of the respondents were reported to have contacted diseases as a result of public latrine use. This study has shown that poor maintenance of practice exposed the users of latrine to various diseases. This study recommended that Community leaders must ensure that users have been sensitized on the correct use, appropriate maintenance, hand washing and other basic hygiene practices
- ItemCOVID 19 Omicron: The Origin, Presentation, Diagnosis, Prevention and Control(Asian Journal of Research in Infectious Diseases, 2022) Abdulwasiu Oladele Hassan; Emmanuel Ifeanyi Obeagu; David Toluwani Ajayi; Adeyemo Abolaji Tolulope; Chinelo Chioma Madekwe; Chika Chizitelu Madekwe; Justina N. Ikpenwa; Sarah NakyeyuneCoronaviruses have become a global health threat over the past two decades as their geographical spread has accelerated. Coronavirus disease 2019, also known as COVID-19, is the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 The epidemic caused by (SARS-CoV-2). The first known case was confirmed in Wuhan, China in December 2019, where he has caused two pandemics in the past. Severe acute respiratory syndrome and Middle East respiratory syndrome are followed by the current COVID-19 outbreak in China. The virus originates from a zoonotic source and is spread by direct and contact transmission. Symptoms range from fever to cough, muscle aches to severe respiratory failure. Diagnosis is confirmed by reverse transcriptase-PCR. Treatment of COVID-19 consists primarily of supportive care and mechanical ventilation in critical cases. Prevention strategies, along with successful disease isolation and community containment, play an important role in reducing the spread of the virus among the public. A vaccine has been developed to clear the virus from its host, but it is not yet known whether the vaccine works against the virus's newest subspecies, the Omicron subspecies. This review summarizes the most recent research advances in structure, epidemiology, and etiology. We also focused on mutational patterns, an important feature of viral virology, and examined existing variants, especially its omicron variant. The clinical features of COVID-19, current treatments, and scientific advances to combat the epidemic novel coronavirus were discussed
