Performance of the learners is a basic indicator of effective learning. Grade scored in internal examinations are normally used as measures of the subjects. In this study, the researcher looked into qualifications, experience of teachers, teaching resources and the methods employed during instruction. The study further established that there are other factors that contribute to performance apart from the teacher's quality and teaching resources. Simple random and strategic sampling techniques were used. The sampled candidates were given questionnaires to fill in. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used. The researcher hopes that the findings of the study will be of great importance to the Mathematics learners, educators, parents and society at large.

- ItemDrug abuse and academic performance of Secondary School students in Turbo Division, Vasingishu District in Kenya.(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning., 2007-11) Kiptoo, Christopher SamuelDrug abuse affects an individual in any organization by directly affecting their health rendeiing them less productive and inefficient. In the long run the organization fails to achieve their objective as a result of unproductive workers, high absenteeism, shoddy work and reduced staff morale. This study aimed at assessing the extent level of illicit chug use in secondary schools and the impact on academic perfmmance. It looked at various policies and practices the secondary schools has put in place to effectively manage illicit drugs in schools. The study covered the three secondary schools namely; Leseru, Kamagut and Kapkong. The methodology adopted was survey by use of questionnaire which we supplemented by oral interviews in data collection. The study population compiised a total of 500 students of form three and four. Stratified sampling was used in each school per form on basis of gender. A total of 20% sample was taken was taken for each category. Descriptive statistics was used in analysis and presentation of the data. The funding of the three schools highly indicated that minimal effort has been put in place to control and prevent students from using abusive drugs. The study recommended that the school managers and other stake holders should come up with programmes that will assist the institutions and students to prevent and manage the use of abusive drugs. The researcher findings shall be beneficial to schools, parents, students and teachers in establishment of policies and programmes on management and prevention of excessive use of illicit drugs in secondary schools.
- ItemEffect Of Hiv/Aids On Academic Performance Of Secondary School Students In Kabarole District. A Case Study Of Kibiito Sub-County.(Kampala International University, School of Science Education, 2019-04) Nanfumba, DanielThe effect of HIV/AIDS on secondary school students in Kibiito sub-county Kaborole district. The research adopted a case study design targeting a number of 4 schools. The Centre has four secondary schools both public and private. The researcher employed purposive sampling technique. The data was then analyzed using percentages, pie charts, tables, bar graphs and frequency distribution techniques using SPSS Version 16. The study established that Students with HIV/AIDS have challenges ranging from absenteeism occasioned by their attendance to medical care as well as caring for their aging and ailing parents. This eventually forces them to drop out of school when their parents die. The study recommends that Students living with HIV/AIDS should be supported by the government through provision of free secondary school education to ease the burden on parents. Child headed families should be eradicated by indenting orphans and initiating consultation development funds to help them with bursaries to reduce poverty.
- ItemEffects of Gender Issues on the Academic Performance of Learners in Secondary Schools: A Case Study of Soy Secondary School(Kampala International University, bachelors degree of science with education, 2009-08) Jepkogei, Limo PriscahThe essence of this study was to determine the impact of the gender issues on the academic performance of learners in selected schools of Soy Division , Uasin Gishu West, Kenya. Specific objectives of the study were to: examine the impact of gender on academic performance of learners in Kiobatek district and to examine strategies used by schools to improve on the academic performance of the girls and boys in Soy Division . The methods used for data collection were face to face interview, which were carried on with parents, Questionnaires were distributed to students and teachers. Observation was done on the state of the learners. The findings revealed by 70% of the respondents that gender issues affect the performance of the learner's negatively. 58% of the respondents also revealed that majority of the learners in the schools are boys. According to 70% of the respondents most of the schools had gender biasness in all the resources used by the learners. 80% of the respondents revealed that poverty has greatly affected the performance of the learners. To ensure quality, the study recommended that, the government should step in to see that all children are taken to school both girls and boys. The parents and the community should be sensitized on the importance of educating all their children both boys and girls. The government non-government organizations, publishers and curriculum developers should work hand in hand to produce gender sensitive books, which will change the attitude and stereotype thinking.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of gender on academic performance of students in public secondary schools in mathematics and sciences. A study will be carried out in Uasin-Gishu West District Rift-Valley Province Kenya. A causal comparative research design will be used to investigate the influence of students gender on academic performance in mathematics and science, stratified sampling technique will be used to categorize the schools into single random sampling technique will be employed to select schools from each category. Respondents from each of the selected schools will be chosen through simple random sampling technique. The main instrument of data collection will be the questionnaire. Data obtained will be analyzed using both descriptive and inferential. The findings of this study will equip teacher, policy -makers and other stakeholders with knowledge on how to improve the academic performance in mathematics and sciences as well as achieve gender parity.

To specific objectives of the study were to investigate the relationship between the effects mentioned and academic performance in Manga division, and to investigate the role of the community in alleviating poverty and improving education in Manga Division. The methods used for data collection were questionnaires to the staff members of the schools and learners involved in the study. The findings were presented and interpreted in relation to the study objectives and research questions. While linking to the existing literature, results included demographic characteristics, frequency and percentages. Based on the findings, it was observed that poverty affected the academic performance of learners negatively. In chapter five, development of solutions to the problem, summary of the findings and conclusions were attempted. The findings suggested recommendations on areas pertaining to the provision of school facilities for learners to learn well.
- ItemEffects of Universal Secondary Education on Academic Performance among Learners in selected Secondary Schools in Nakasongola District: Central Uganda(Kampala International University, School of Education, 2017-08) Semanda, TomThis project will be conducted for roughly five months from the time of proposal designing up to data analysis and presentation; it employed descriptive research design which involved stratified sampling method. The objectives of the project were: to investigate the effect of Universal secondary education on academic performance of learners in selected secondary schools to identify the challenges faced by the teachers involved in the programme and to create awareness on the effects of universal secondary Education on the learner’s performance. The research will be conducted in Uganda as a case study of selected secondary schools in Nakasongola district. Questionnaires and interviews will be used as research instruments among the head teachers and teachers for collection of data. Some of the major conclusions made were that academic performance has deteriorated since the introduction of universal secondary education. This was attributed to a huge teachers shortage due to the large increase in enrolment, inadequate funds provided by the Government and which were not disbursed in good time, increase in indiscipline due to poor class control by the teachers and inadequate facilities which were to be shared by the large number of pupils. Due to the large numbers, most teachers gave fewer examinations. It therefore calls on the government to employ more teachers, increase the amount of funding to these schools and provide more facilities for teachers and learners.

In the review of related literature, all sources viewed relevant to the study were revisited and these assisted a great deal in assisting the research have a clear picture of what the study was to entail. A descriptive design was adopted for this particular study since it was realized that much of the study was about explaining a scenario. Questionnaires' and interview guides were adopted for this particular study. Data collected was sorted, coded and presented in tales and figure to convey a clear picture of the findings. The findings revealed that the materials were inadequate, and hence affected the performance students. It was therefore recommended that using student-centered teaching approaches and also, using meaningful activities in their classrooms could assist i promoting the academic performance of students in Chemistry.

The findings revealed that attitudes of girls towards mathematics affected their performance and achievement. The study was significant to the following: To parents; the study made them aware of the importance of family background in shaping the academic performance of their children, To the school management, the study enlightened them on the important factors in the student’s family background so as to be able to deal with or pay more attention to those factors which may affect adversely the students’ academic performance, The study was also to benefit other future researchers in the same field with the literature to support their arguments and hence improved knowledge. The sample size was 100 respondents. The data was collected using questionnaire and interview guide. The data control methods were reliability and validity. The data was analyzed by quantitative and qualitative analysis. Then findings, recommendations and conclusions were drawn by the research.

The study was conducted under three research objectives. These were; to establish how the management of school rules influence student’s academic performance, to establish how time management influences students” academic performance, to establish how the administration of punishments influence student’s academic performance. The study employed survey research design particularly cross-sectional survey design. Questionnaire was the main instrument of data collection. tvio public second~ry schools were randomly selected in bulambuli district in which the study was conducted. The major findings of the study were; all schools have written rules and regulations but which they don’t understand, some rules and regulations require modifications and others lack consistence in their implementation, which raises students” anger leading to violence, strikes and aggression. Also time is poorly managed in school where the designed timetables are not respected. Punishments were found to b~ unfairly administered that causes dissatisfaction, anger and thus inducing acts of indiscipline such as strikes, vandalism of school property as well as violence among students. The study came up with the following conclusions based on the study findings; much as school The study came up with the following conclusions based on the study findings; much as school rules help in controlling student’s behavior in the school, their awareness is lacking among students. Also, time being a scarce resource and need to be well planned for through a time schedule, this timetable lack respect and therefore not followed as expected causing indiscipline among students. Punishments were also found to be poorly administered to students, which create chaos in schools characterized with school property destruction, and thus affecting students” general academic performance. The study also proposed some recommendations to deal with the wide spread and increasing levels of indiscipline among adolescent youths in secondary schools in Uganda. These include, strengthening school rules and regulations, strengthening counseling and guidance in schools than expelling them, having a uniform discipline code, which will assist parents, students and other stakeholders to appreciate the role of punishments in schools. In addition, a strong parent-teacher relationship needs to be established so as to address the effects of indiscipline in schools, and also teachers should be the role models of discipline if this struggle is to achieve its objectives.

The report is made up of five chapters, chapter one deals with the introduction, that is, background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives and others, chapter two is all about the literature methodology, chapter four deals with the analysis of data as got from the field and finally chapter five which reviews the discussions, conclusions and recommendations. The study was guided by several objectives and research questions which were discussed under sub-topics. The questionnaires were used to collect primary data from the learners, teachers and parents and teachers who were the respondents. The questions were closed ended; they were administered in four schools in Mbale municipality, Mbale district which was the area of study. The area of the study showed that early marriages affect the education performance of girls in schools, therefore because of such a problem, some intervention measures must be put in place for the improvement of the girls performance so that the we develop the nation. The performance of girls continually lags behind due to some factors like cultural practices, lack of good role models, poverty, learning environment and among others which should be investigated.

The researcher tried to find out the causes of intestinal worms in Nyamilama village, how worms affect children performance and establish way forward in eradication and suggest some simple home remedies of wo1ms infections. The researcher used descriptive survey design. The study was aimed at collecting information from respondents on their attitudes and opinion in relation to incidence of wonns to their academic perfonnance on pupils in Nyamilama village. The researcher used both primmy and secondary data. Primary data was obtained from questioners and interview while secondary data was obtained from internet, journals and text books. Both qualitative and quantitative technique were also employed to enable the researcher get reliable resource. According to the research findings intestinal worms are caused by several factors; taking food with unwashed hand, food contaminated by worms and not well cooked, drinking unboiled water, walking bare foot and eating unwashed fruits. So health and parental care depmtment in schoos should be established in order to educate pupils and society as whole to learn the precautions and preventive measures which will help in combat of worms in the society these will reduce the incidence of worms in society which in turns will increase the academic performance of pupils in schools.

The role of the teacher is to manipulate the environment in order to facilitate earning while at the same time considering learner's diversities. What the teacher does therefore results in what is learnt. This means that the teacher's attitudes towards his/her learner greatly affect the learning of pupils with special needs 11 Students with learning disabilities have for a long time been denied adequate opportunities to practice and develop to their maximum potentials. For a long time such learners have been subjected to negative labeling, such as stupid, idiot, thickly slow learners and low achievers, by their teachers. This trend has persisted lnspite of intervention measures taken to alleviate the problem. The objective of the study was to evaluate the inclusive education and academic performance in selected schools in Kirisia division, Sambura District. A study adopted a descriptive survey method. The study included 30 respondents where 20 pupils and 10 teachers were interviewed. A questionnaire was developed for the respondents. The study found out that the level of teacher's attitude and development of ,learners is generally fair and students with disabilities perform fairly. The study recommended that the government should reward the teacher's good work by offering them better remuneration to enable them to develop positive attitude towards the learners with disabilities.
- ItemMotivation and Academic Performance of Pupils of Nathuna Primary School In Kiambu District Kenya(Kampala International University, bachelors degree of science with education, 2007-12) Samuel M, MungaiThe researcher wanted to find out the relationship between performance. The study was carried out in Nyathuna Primary School, Kikuyu division Kiambu district in Kenya. The study involved learners of Nyathuna Primary school which has a population of 400 learners. Learners from upper primary classes 5 to 8, totaling 150 were used. The learners answered open ended questions. The answers were marked and the results recorded and tabulated. Deductions were then made from the results obtained. The observations from the conclusions were then used to come up with the recommendations to teachers, parents, community and the government as well as areas for further research.
