This has really worsened the performance in K.C.S.E. The Researcher will find out the impacts of absenteeism and try to find out how the impacts have contributed to be decimal performance of the students. Then necessary recommendations will be made to the Government of Kenya, the Ministry of Education, the Teachers Service Commission and the management committees to devise new methods and approaches to curb the problem of absentism in our schools in order to achieve their Educational goals for all. The study will be carried out in public secondary schools in Kisii District - Kenya.
- ItemAbsenteeism and academic performance of learners in secondary schools in Makindye Sub-county Kampala District.a case study of St. peters s.s Nsambya(Kampala International University,College of Education, 2017-08) Akumu, ElizabethThe purpose of this study is to establish the impact of absenteeism on the academic performance of students in secondary school. Specifically the study wanted to • Find out how long distance affects the performance of learners. o Findout how poor feeding affects the performance of learners in secondary schools. o Findout how domestic work affects the learners’performance. The study was done by developing a conceptual framework relating the factors causing absenteeism and how it leads to poor performance. The study used both qualitative and quantitative research design .It covered 50 respondents, 6 head teachers, 10 teachers and 34 students. Questionnaires which are open-ended were used. Interviews and group discussion were also ~mployed to get reliable ideas. These were supplemented on by school attendance record books such as registers. UCE and UACE manuals were also used. Graphs of the questionnaire data are presented for each sub-group illustrating the type and frequency of responses indicated in the questionnaire. Statistical analysis was used. Similarities and differences of the survey responses of boys and girls was found out including their opinions. The study revealed that a majority of the students said that they involved in work at home which affects their domestic work. Most respondents said that parents do notadequately provide basic needs to their children. Results from the interviews showed that students were not well while at school and that was the reason why most of them would dodge school. Most of the teachers agreed that there is no ~ccess to water since the school could not boil drinking water. The parents should be sensitized by the teachers on the importance of their student’s academics so that they change the proper way of handling their children and give them time to read books. The government should come out with a law by MOE and other educational stakeholders to guide the children against child labor
- ItemAcademic performance of students in biology subject of Leseru secondary school in Uasin- Gishu district, Kenya(Kampala international international: College of Education, open and distance learning, 2007-08) Leonida, BusieneiThis study was a descriptive survey method that determined the Academic Performance in Biology, subject of Leseru Secondary School in Uasin-Gishu District Kenya. This study was conducted in Leseru Secondary School in Turbo Division Uasin Gishu District, Kenya. The School is situated 17 Kilometers West of Eldoret town along the Kenya-Uganda road. This study included 65 students wherein 23 third year students and 42 fourth year students. Among the 65 students 24 are male and 41 are female students. In the study was researcher-made instrument which was a record sheet that contained the profile of the respondents as to age, gender and academic level. The researcher wrote a transmittal letter to the principal of Leseru Secondary School in Turbo division asking for permission to conduct the study in his institution. Once the permission had been granted the researcher took the record sheet to the School Academic Committee Department to be filled. Once the record sheet had been filled, the researcher went ahead to calculate the frequencies and percentages to determine the profile of the respondents as to age, gender, academic level and level of academic performance. The paired or related t-test was used to test for significant difference in the level of academic performance between male and female students. The research findings shall be beneficial to the Ministry of Education, the Provincial Director of Education, District Education Officers, School Principals, teachers, parents and students in establishment of factors affecting academic performance.

Specifically, this study determined the profile of the students as to age, gender and class. It determined the level of academic performance and determined if there is a significant difference in the level of academic performance between male and female students. Design: This study employed the descriptive survey method of investigation. Environment: This study was conducted at Jamhuri High School in Nairobi city, Kenya. The school offers the 8-4-4 system of education. The school offered a variety of subjects which are Biology, Chemistry, History, C.R.E, Physics, Computer studies, Geography and Mathematics. Subjects: This study involved 82 students in the fourth year In high school namely: 40 from 4 West students and 42 from 4 East students. Instrument: This study was a researcher devised instrument which was a record sheet which sought to determine the profile of the respondents as to age, gender, class and level of academic performance in chemistry subject. Data Collection Procedures: The frequency and percentage was used to determine the profile of the respondents as to age, gender, class and level of academic performance in chemistry subject. The paired or related t-test was used to test for significant difference in the level of academic performance between male and female students. Findings: This study revealed the following: the mean age of the students was 17.93; the level of academic performance was fairly good (mean = 51); It was evident that there is a significant difference in the level of academic performance between male and female students. Conclusion: Based on the findings, it was concluded that the academic performance of students in chemistry subject were rated as fairly good. However, it needs to be improved.

- ItemEffect of corporal punishment on the academic performance of learners in the selected schools of Kirinyaga District, Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2009-11) Kiiru, Dishon NdubaiThe purpose of this study was to determine effects of corporal punishment on pupils in the selected schools of Kirinyaga district Kenya. Specific objectives of the study were to: Identify the Causes of corporal punishment Determine the Psychological Effects of corporal punishment, Investigate the Social consequences of corporal punishment, determine the Physical effects of corporal punishment, determine how Corporal punishment leads to School Drop Out and determine the effects of corporal punishment on Classroom Discipline and Instruction. The methods used for data collection were interviews with teachers and questionnaires were distributed to pupils. Observation was also be done on the state of the children and focus group discussions were held with the community members in languages that they understood. The findings revealed that the most cause of corporal punishment was poverty that is 94.4%, followed by drug abuse 90.3%, 88.9 of the respondents also mentioned child labor. 48.6% of the respondents strongly agreed that corporal punishment leads to depression. The study also established by 59% that corporal punishment leads to violence. 45.9% of the respondents strongly agreed that corporal punishment leads to injuries. The study also established by 35% respondents that corporal punishment leads to school drop out and finally 3 7. 8% of the respondents strongly agreed that Corporal punishment leads to further indiscipline. The study recommended that: The community should be sensitized and educated on the effects of corporal punishment on children and also change their attitudes towards it and also teach them how to punish their children positively. Teachers, parents and the community should adopt the use of positive reinforcement. Use of positive reinforcement techniques reduces the frequency and extent of student misbehavior. Guidance and counseling should be availed in schools to help children who are emotionally disturbed whish results into misbehavior.
- ItemEffects of drug abuse on academic performance among secondary school students: a case study of Kapsabet Division, Nandi District, Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2011-07) Tenai, Chetoo; LucyThe study examined the impact of drug abuse on academic performance of learners. The general objectives of the study were to investigate the causes of drug abuse and its impact on academic performance of learners. The study took a quantitative approach to collect and interpret the data. The study also employed a descriptive survey design and used a questionnaire as a tool to collect data. The population targeted was secondary school teachers who were sampled using the simple random sampling to get the teachers who would fill the questionnaire. These teachers were used to investigate the effects of abuse to learning in secondary schools. After the researcher had analyzed the questionnaire, it was established that there was drug abuse in the Zone. It was also found out that the most commonly abused drug is alcohol. It is also evident that drug abuse had negative effects to learning for instance learners who indulged in dmabuse had low academic achievements and indiscipline cases. The researcher recommends that trained personnel handle cases of drug abuse to stop its effects on leaning and this can be achieved through guidance and counseling.

A case study of wait Aluk secondary school Rutto Miriam Chepkogei(Kampala international international: College of Education, open and distance learning, 2009-08) Miriam, Rutto ChepkogeiThe purpose of the study was to determine the impact of the gender issues on the academic performance of learners in selected schools of Central division , Trans-Nzoia West west district, Kenya. Specific objectives of the study were to: examine the impact of gender on academic performance of learners Central division , Kiambu, Kenya and to examine strategies used by schools to improve on the academic performance of the girls and boys in Waitaluk Secondary School west division. The methods used for data collection were face to face interview, which were carried on with parents, Questionnaires were distributed to students and teachers. Observation was done on the state of the learners. The fmdings revealed by 70% of the respondents that gender issues affect the performance of the learner's negatively. 58% of the respondents also revealed that majority of the learners in the schools are boys. According to 70% of the respondents most of the schools had gender biasness in all the resources used by the learners. 80% of the respondents revealed that poverty has greatly affected the performance of the learners. To ensure quality, the study recommended that, the government should step in to see that all children are taken to school both girls and boys. The parents and the community should be sensitized on the importance of educating all their children both boys and girls. The government non-government organizations, publishers and curriculum developers should work hand in hand to produce gender sensitive books, which will change the attitude and stereotype thinking.

The specific objectives of the study was to investigate the relationship between the effects mentioned and academic performance in Kabati division, and to investigate the role of the community in alleviating poverty and improving education in Kabati Division. The methods used for data collection were questionnaires to the staff members of the schools and learners involved in the study. The findings were presented and interpreted in relation to the study objectives and research questions. While linking to the existing literature, results included demographic characteristics, frequency and percentages. Based on the findings, it was observed that poverty affected the academic performance of learners negatively. In chapter five, development of solutions to the problem, summary of the findings and conclusions were attempted. The findings suggested recommendations on areas pertaining to the provision of school facilities for learners to learn well.
- ItemEffects of students’ living conditions on their academic performance in secondary schools of Katabi Sub County, Entebbe Municipality(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2019-08) Lugolobi TonyThe purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of living conditions on students~ academic performance. The study objectives were; to examine the effect of feeding, school sanitation and accommodation on students~ academic performance in Katabi sub county Wakiso district. A cross sectional survey design using both quantitative and qualitative methods was used to collect data from 300 students and 64 teachers and 7 Head teachers. The qualitative study design investigated the possibility of the relationship between the independent and the dependent variables like feeding, sanitation, accommodation and academic performance. The sample was drawn from both boarding day students in secondary schools of Katabi Sub County especially those in Advanced level. Data on living conditions was gathered using a questionnaire with standard Likert type scale with closed ranking items. Structured interview guides were used to collect views from the non-students. Data from questionnaires was analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics of Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and the t-test while interview data was analyzed using frequency analysis by counting the number of times of responses had by the respondents. The findings suggested that students in schools which performed poorly were not satisfied with the living conditions and this affected their academic performance compared to schools which performed fairly where students were satisfied with the living conditions. From the study, the following conclusions were drawn; firstly, poor feeding of students negatively affects their academic performance. Secondly poor sanitation negatively affects students’ academic performance and finally, school accommodation negatively affects students’ academic performance. From the above conclusions it was therefore recommended that in schools where living conditions were very poor, the school administration had to set up an agricultural and poultry farms to supplement on the food provided to improve on feeding.

Ireri, ModestThis research report contains five major chapters as follows:- Chapter 1 Introduction The research investigated effect of environment and academic performance of physical handicapped learners in regular school and suggests solutions to these problems under recommendations in chapter five. Chapter II. Review of Related Literature The researcher reviewed related literature on the following sub headings: Types of learners with physical handicap orthopedically impaired, Neurological disabilities and those with health disabilities. The resources used to support learners with physical handicap are adaptive devices such as standing tables, hand pointers, book turners and others. The methods of supporting learners with physical handicap under medical intervention, physiotherapy, occupational therapy. How the learners relate to teachers and factors that lead low academic performance were also check. Chapter II Methodology The researcher used qualitative research approach for the study. This was appropriate as it clearly shows specific number of occurrences of variable that were investigated. Descriptive survey design was employed. The researcher used questionnaire to collect data from the teachers who interacted with the learners. Thirty schools scattered all over the division were used for the study. At least one teacher in charge of SNE sampled from these thirty schools, Chapter 4. Findings From the data it was found out by the researcher that the effects of environment on academic performance of the learners with physical handicap were due to lack of support from teachers, parents and peer. Negative attitude between the teachers and the learners, lack of appropriate education resources and lack of conducive environment for learning. Chapter: 5 Conclusions The researcher concluded that the learners with physical handicap can perform well in academic work when the challenge facing them are addressed seriously especially by the government, teachers, parents and the community at large.

The specific objectives were to examine the endogenous and exogenous factors affecting the performance in physics in Kisii south District. Questionnaires were the main method used for data collection .They was of two types, the students' questionnaires and the teachers' questionnaires. The findings were presented in tabular fmm and interpreted in line with specific objectives and the research questions. The findings were linked to the literature review of chapter two. From the findings ofthe research work, recommendations were made so as to boost the students' performance in physics.

The health and social consequences of drug abuse cause global concern, as they affect not only the individual who abuses, but also his/her family and friends as well as the wider community and society. Recent research statistics has shown that the prevalence of drug abuse in Kenya is expanding rapidly to the distraction of the society. Kenyans cannot afford to complacent about it, thus their arise an immediate need to conduct an investigation on the issue of rampant drug abuse among the youth especially the students hence to establishing the impact of drug abuse on academic performance. The study adopted a Descriptive research design. This enhanced the researcher to obtain a better understanding of the causes, problems and impact of drug abuse on academic performance of the students of Aga khan high school. The method chosen allowed a collection of comprehensive and intensive data and provided an in-depth understanding of the topic under study. Information collected was analyzed and edited to create consistency and completeness. After collecting the questionnaires they were edited for completeness and consistency across the respondents and to locate omissions. Information obtained from the research study was presented and analyzed using bar charts, narratives, and statistical figures. This report provides suggestions for more effective practice in the field of drug abuse ·and Prevention measures based on the lessons learned from practical experience of others. It is designed for policy makers, planners and practitioners who have responsibilities in the area of drug abuse and prevention.

Chapter two is all about review of related literature whose contents include introduction, prevalence of HIV/AIDS, causes of orphan hood, guardians role in imparting discipline in orphans, forms of discipline, problems faced by orphans, problems of single parenthood, low socio economic status, adolescents, limitations of socio-economic status, peer orientation, social outcasts, student indiscipline and gap in knowledge. Chapter three describes the research methodology. The research methodology areas of concern are research designs, research environment, respondents, sampling methods, research instruments, and data collection procedure and data analysis. Chapter four reports research findings. The report is based on the following sub-topics: causes of orphan hood, role of guardian in discipline, problems encountered by orphans, discipline, academic performance and tables and charts. Chapter five, which is the last, details out the discussions, conclusions and recommendations under below subtopics; discussions, conclusions and recommendations.

Kisii District. Kenya. This study was necessitated by the repeated poor performance \\·itnessed amongst candidates in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (K.C.S.E) .Examinations in Chemistry subject in the division. The study therefore sought to establish the factors behind the same with the view for setting the stage for reviews and reforms in pedagogy and learning environment. The literature review focused on the teacher related factors. student related l~tctors and physical facilities as the ones that may inf1uence performance of students in a subject. This was because performance of learners is believed to be a function of teaching and learning processes, of which these L1ctors are indispensable. The study targeted all the 16 schools in Mosocho division of Kisii District. In the schools, there were 16 teachers of Chemistry, 16 Head teachers and !.800 students who were in form 3 and form 4 and taking Chemistry. further. the physical f~Kilities that arc used in teaching Chemistry were targeted. Such facilities are laboratories. Laboratory equipment and text books among others. The researcher used simple random sampling in the selection of schools for the study. Thus. eight (50'%) schools were selected. Purposive sampling strategy \Vas used in the selection of 16 teachers or Chemistry and 16 Heaclteachers. The study rurthcr used the sale Study in the selection or Form 3 and Form 4 Chemistry students I(H· the Study. The physical t~Kilities were observed and the documents analyzed \\ere selected .·. purposively. The researcher Litilized questionnaires in soliciting inl(xmation li·om the ill; Chemistry teachers. hcadteachcrs and students oi'Chcmistry. The ubsLT\'atiun guide used in soliciting information about the actual physical racialists that aid Chemistry teaching within the schools in the study. The document analysis guide was also used in accessing the student performance in K.C.S.L in the schools in !tile last 5 years and the actual inventory schools. The findings of the study were reported using means. percentages. frequencies tables and standard deviations.
- ItemPhysical facilities and academic performance of science in Ruchu Girls Secondary School, Maragua District, Kenya(Kampala International University.College Of Education, 2007-08) Mwangi, Daniel WaicigoThis study determined physical facilities of schools in relation to Academic performance of science students. It determines the profile of the respondents and determined the relationship between lighting and academic performance of science students, determined the relationship between building age and quality and academic performance of science students and determined the relationship between class size and academic performance of science students. The first objective was to find out the relationship between lighting and academic performance of science students. The findings reveal that lack of lights in the school stops students from reading and therefore negatively affects their academic performance. Also, it was revealed that the poor lighting of the school affects the eye sight of the students which naturally affects their academic performance. The second objective of the study was to find out if the state of building age and its quality affects academic performance. The finds reveal that poor buildings stop school authorities from buying science equipment necessary for students to learn. The third objective was to find out if class size has any effect on academic performance of science students. The findings revealed the big class size stops some students from hearing what the teacher is teaching and this affects academic performance. The study focused on the failure by students to hear what the teacher is teaching because of the big size of the class, the failure by the teacher to notice who misses classes and the failure by teachers to give exercises and tests to students because of the over whelming no students in class.

Odhong, ObullThe study focused on the impact of teacher's quality and teaching resources in teaching maths in secondary schools on the performance of Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE). Performance of the learners is a basic indicator of effective learning. Grade scored in internal examinations are normally used as measures of the subjects. In this study, the researcher looked into qualifications, experience of teachers, teaching resources and the methods employed during instruction. The study further established that there are other factors that contribute to performance apart from the teacher's quality and teaching resources. Simple random and strategic sampling techniques were used. The sampled candidates were given questionnaires to fill in. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used. The researcher hopes that the findings of the study will be of great importance to the mathematics learners, educators, parents and society at large.
- ItemSchool management on academic performance of public secondary schools in Rangwe division Homa-bay county, Kenya(Kampala international international: College of Education, open and distance learning, 2011-08) Alfred, Rabilo OtienoSince the introduction of formal education, there has steady growth in enrolment in secondary schools in Kenya. This in tum has raised concerns about the quality of education especially with respect to equity, access, relevance and efficiency of secondary education. This study sought to investigate school management on academic performance, students' achievement in numeracy of k.c.s.e was used as indicator of quality. The study utilized survey design, purposive and stratified random sample of 20 secondary schools out of 40 secondary schools in Rang we Division Homa Bay County. Teachers, B.O.G members, P.T.A members were purposefully selected while pupils and parents were sampled at random. Data was collected using questionnaires, interviews and observation. The study outcome showed that the education system was moving in the right pace and direction towards the attainment of the education goals, some deficiencies in achievement test scores, learning facilities and human resources factors were observed. From these findings, recommendations on ways of improving quality of secondary education in Kenya were formulated

Single-parent-families are now very common to many societies today particularly Kapchorwa and this may be caused by separation of the parents or divorce and death. This study seeks to investigate the influence of single-parent-families on academic performance of secondary school students in Kapchorwa town council and it was found that, students from single parent families perform poorly than students from two parent families.
