Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of domestic violence on psychosocial well-being of pupils in Masafu Sub County in Busia District. The study was based on the following 3 objectives; (i) To identify the forms of domestic violence against pupils in Masafu Sub County in Busia District; (ii) To examine the causes of domestic violence in Masafu Sub County in Busia District; and (iii) To establish the impact of domestic violence on psychosocial well-being of pupils in Masafu Sub County in Busia district. The study employed a cross-sectional research design and a sample size of 80 respondents from a target population of 100 was used for the study. In regard to forms of domestic violence against pupils in Masafu Sub County; majority, 53.8% of respondents agreed that pupils are affected by emotional violence through insults, shouts, repeated criticism, frequent blames, threatening, denial of love and affection; majority, 57.7% accepted that adults use abusive language in order to make children obey their commands; majority, 60% accepted that physical violence such as beating (slapping or kicking), pushing and assault with an object or weapon are applied to pupils; majority, 61.3% accepted that pupils are affected by economic violence such as destruction of a child’s personal property, withholding of financial support like not providing school fees or uniform, giving a child excessive work and denying food to a child; majority, 68.8% agreed that pupils are affected by sexual violence such as touching of body sexual organs by their guardians and kissing on the mouth, against their will. In regard to the causes of domestic violence in Masafu Sub County in Busia District; study findings revealed that domestic violence is due to violence in family of origin (mean = 4.19), low self-esteem between the spouses (mean = 4.17); isolating one spouse from the other (mean = 3.80); economic stress (mean = 4.19); drug and alcohol abuse (mean = 4.01); pornography exposure (mean = 4.07) and jealousy and parent’s ignorance (mean =3.84). In regard to the impact of domestic violence on psychosocial well-being of pupils in Masafu Sub County in Busia District; study found a weak positive correlational relationship (Pearson’s r =+0.160) between domestic violence and psychosocial well-being of pupils in Masafu Sub County in Busia District. The study concluded that; domestic violence exists in Masafu Sub County; forms of domestic violence against them were physical violence, emotional violence, sexual violence and economic violence. Causes of domestic violence were violence in family of origin, low self-esteem between the spouses, isolating one spouse from the other, economic stress, drug and alcohol abuse, pornography exposure and jealousy and parent’s ignorance. Findings shows that domestic violence inflicts harm to children such as emotional harm, social harm and psychological harm which impact the child learning systems thereby influencing a child to lose interest in education, arrive late at school, being absent from school, dropout of school and even early marriage. The study recommended that; there is therefore an urgent need for the government to integrate the service of psychologists in the mental health programs; need for the government to introduce awareness campaigns on the effect or implications of domestic violence especially in parishes through some agencies and organizations; Finally, need for the government to intervene by making education free for all and to provide a means of checking the number of children a couple should have especially people in the rural areas taking into consideration the economic situations.
