The influence of culture on socio-economic development of women; a case study of Lotome Sub County, Napak District Uganda

Abstract

Although the United Nation Development report Programme has put forward that development must lead to long and healthy lives, access to information and resources needed for decent living and to be able to participate in the community life. The development cooperation report 2005/2006 indicates that Uganda like any other developing country has the History of dependency on outside support which is unsustainable in terms of development. The country is still characterized with cultural practices that do not support development and they have always influenced the soclo -economic development of women in one way or another. The women suffer with a number of challenges as a result of cultural perception which has affected their involvement in socio -economic activities and the research was intended to find out if there some practical solutions to the challenges facing women in socio -economic development. The research study was intended to find out the influence of culture on socio -economic development in Lotome Sub County, Napak District, North Eastern Region of Karamoja and will be conducted from February to may 2014. the study will be of importance to the researcher for the award of a degree in development studies, to policy makers in designing development projects and programs and will be used by other students for future references. The study will be based on the review of the already existing literature from other authors. Various methods will be used in identifying a study design where both the qualitative and quantitative methods will be used, The next thing will be the presentation, analysis and interpretation of the data, this involves the findings of the study. This was followed by chapter five with the discussion, conclusion and recommendation which has been derived from the findings of the study.
