Abstract
This study finds out influence of job design on staff morale in the banking industry of Embu County. The study has its background on the fact that the aim of job design is to satisfy the requirements of organization for productivity, operational efficiently and quality of products or services and that it also aims to satisfy the needs of individual. The author’s main purpose was to investigate the influence of job design on staff morale in the banking industry. Although the population studied is from one locality, the findings of the study will be used by banks within Embu County as they are representatives of others. The literature review of this study was to examine past studies done in the areas of job enrichment, job enlargement, job rotation and autonomous work groups. The study adopted a descriptive research. Data was collected and analyzed for purpose of describing current situations. Simple random sampling design was used to obtain a sample. Questionnaire was used to collect the data from the selected respondents. The target population was 840 employees within the county; accessible population was 360 employees in Banks in Embu Town and a sample size of 189 employees. The study found that banks have different description of the jobs which had both positive and negative impact of the morale of their employees (mean = 3.3425). The study also found that their existence a significant relationship between the job design and the employees morale in selected banks within Embu County, where r = 0.452 and the significance value = 0.000 < 0.5. The study concludes that job design and employee’s morale in banks within Embu County are correlated with one another and that job design has more negative impact to the morale of the employees which consequently affects their productivity and satisfaction. The study recommends that Future research could replicate this study and investigate the impact of job design on staff morale in banking industry in another County. Comparisons could then be made to determine whether the differences exist regarding the impact of job design on employees’ morale.
