Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate community policing as a strategy for upgrading the level of security in Puntland. Hence it’s examined by identifying the level of awareness of the concept of community policing projects in Puntland, investigating the current status of Puntland security and need for community policing projects, and identifying the challenges that may face community policing projects in Puntland. In gathering information the research study employed both primary and secondary sources. The primary sources were distributed questionnaire, and interview; the secondary sources were the literature work and internet. This study employed cross-sectional survey as a research design; the data were collected purposely from Garowe city. In selecting the respondents and area of sample, the researcher used two sampling techniques, cluster sampling was used to select Garowe city while purposive sampling was used to select the sample size of the target population. Questionnaire and interview from the respondents were engaged for data analysis using tables and charts. From the findings of the study it was exposed that the level of awareness of community policing projects in Puntland was low leading to difficult in implementation on the current status with respect to security in Puntland, the researcher found that the police were far from the expectation of the community, and social and economic factors were identified as the main obstacles in the implementation of community policing projects. The study recommended that the community should be educated about the community policing initiatives, monitor the role of police in the community; and to reduce the influences of social and economic factors that are hindering the implementation of community policing projects.
