Abstract
This study investigated the role of instructional materials in the teaching / learning process. It was carried out in Nangabo sub county, wakiso district. Respondents used in data collection were : head teachers, heads of departments and teachers. Questionnaires and interview guides were used in data collection. The total number of respondents were 24. The study was based on three objectives : To find out the instructional materials available in primary schools. To identify the role of instructional materials in the teaching/ learning process. To identify the relationship between instructional materials and the learning process in primary schools. In response to objective one (I) , the respondents reported that ; text books, flash cards, real objects, charts and models were the most commonly available materials in the teaching/ learning process in primary schools. The study also responded to objective 2 by finding out that instructional made lessons quite interesting to the learners and thus effective learners, provided visual access to some things. Quickened pupils' understanding of concepts, encouraged memory, encouraged active participation of learners in the lesson, encouraged creativity among the learners and reduced on the teachers' workload. The researcher therefore concluded that instructional materials motivated learners towards learning which resulted into good academic performance. The researcher finally recommended that government should provide instructional materials to schools.
