Abstract
The study highlights the challenges of implementing community participation in an NGO project within a poor rural context in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The project was undertaken under the auspices of Tearfund, an international NGO. The research shows how the interplay between the independent variables of Community Participation. External Financing and Time (used efficiently) produces positive impact for communities The study shows that an effective balance between the 3 variables leads to effective social recovery projects for the transformation of vulnerable commurn11es It demonstrates that effective community participation in humanitarian 1ir0Jects empowers the community, leads to community ownership and sustainability of projects as well as to efficient and effective resource utilization. The design of the research is mainly descriptive, generating quantitative data but with some qualitative data organized around specific areas of the research. The instruments for data collection \\ere questionnaires, focus groups, NGO regular project reports, government publications, policy documents observation and unstructured interviews. A sample of 85 respondent’s co111pleted the distributed questionnaires and at least 50 people participated in 5 focus groups. The results of the research confirmed that project financing, project time or duration, and com111unity participation have a crucial bearing on social recovery. The research revealed that community participation had a very high effect on social recovery. It also demonstrated that lancing was indispensable for successful community projects. All these, enables were grouped into an explanatory model.
