- ItemEffects of hearing impairment on academic performance in primary schools in Sabatia east zone Sabatia division-Kenya(Kampala International University, Institute of Open and Distance Learning, 2009-11) Ichaminya, Edith K.The effects of hearing impairment on academic performance in primary schools in Sabatia East is the key issue that the researcher made a proposal to investigate the problem, set objectives and made literature review that acted as her source of reference. The researcher identified the methods of carrying out the research in terms of subjects to be involved which she resolved to be regular primary teachers. The approach used was quantitative and qualitative and the procedure used in sampling was the simple random approach. The researcher prepared a questionnaire of sixteen questions which he used to gather information from the respondents. He delivered the questimmaires by herself, briefed the respondents before they filled the forms and handed over to her. The data collected from the twenty five questionnaires was presented, analysed and discussions made per each question set out. The researcher tabulated the information on a frequency table to answer the set out objective questions. From the data the researcher concluded that there are many challenges facing the leamers with learning impairment in regular primary schools in Sabatia East zone that omission to be addressed and a solution made. The researcher made a recommendation on the way forward to learners of hearing impairment in catering for them in an inclusive setting to better their learning.

The government of Kenya introduced a policy of education for all. This benefits only learners in the main stream. Learners with hearing impairment are disadvantaged. Their interests are not looked into in terms of educational resource, infrastructures, health etc. the researcher’s major concern is that learners who are challenged should Pot be discriminated upon more so those with hearing impairment who are dominant within the researcher’s environment. The researcher had to carry out this research targeting learners and parents of the disabled, using interview, observation and questionnaire to come up with the thesis. There was random selection which was descriptive. The major finding is that up to now parents still hide their children with special needs. The researcher came across an incident where a parent did not know what to do because the child had both sexes.

- ItemGirl child education and academic performance in Ainabkoi zone Eldoret east district, Uasin Gishu county rift valley Province, Kenya(Kampala International University,Institute of Open and Distance Learning, 2011-04) Yatich, Musa k.Kenya recognizes education for girls and women as a tool, for empowering them and as a fundamental human right. There is an improvement in the overall literacy for both males and females thus narrowing the gap between them. However, despite their awareness, the national enrollment figures in primary schools camouflage regional variations that pose a challenge to the national achievement. The main goal of closing the gender literacy gap will not, therefore, be achieved without focusing attention on the girl child education in the underprivileged regions in the country. There is evidence that free primary education is faced with several challenges likewise to the girl-child education. and academic performance. This study sets out to highlight the major gender and education challenges facing the girl-child education in Ainabkoi zone, Eldoret East district, Uasin Gishu County, Rift Valley Province in Kenya. The purpose of this study is to investigate the challenges facing girl-child education and academic performance in Ainabkoi zone is specifically aimed at finding out the economic and socio-cultural factors that tend to affect girlchild education and academic performance. This will eventually identify the challenges affecting the achievement facing girl-child education for all and proposes positive actions for mitigation of the situation so as to establish whether there are existing strategies for addressing the challenges facing girl-child education and how to uplift girl's education. The study will, therefore, be made of a descriptive and exploratory design in which both qualitative and quantitative methods used in collecting the data from the children (pupils), head teachers and parents on the challenges facing girl-child education and academic performance. The researcher will target thirteen primary schools which have a population of five thousand eight hundred and forty-one (5841) pupils. The number of respondents who were given the questionnaires will constitute two hundred and forty (240) which were spread equally to all the thirteen schools in the zone. The method to be used while collecting the data included the use of questionnaires interviews, observation, and examination records.

After a careful thought in respect to how mathematics is performed in the area, the researcher saw it was imperative that a study be conducted to investigate the teaching methods in relation to academic performance. The method used in research approach was both quantitative and qualitative approach. The research design was survey method. The instrument used was a questionnaire. The researcher used 20 teachers as his respondents. This was a sample population in Shamata zone. The respondents gave out the difficulties they encounter while teaching mathematics and the teaching methods they use while teaching as requested in the questionnaires. It was noted that there is gender disparity of which boys have more interest than girls. Learners perform poorly for they have negative attitude towards mathematics. Recommendations were put forward as follows:-There should be in service training courses for teachers, learners individual difference should be taken care of, remedial teaching should be done frequently, pupils and teachers should be motivated properly, among others.

The specific objectives were to determine the problems faced by the slow learners in Limuru division, establish the characteristics of slow learners, and determine the major courses of learning difficulties in Limuru division and to establish the intervention measures which can be taken to overcome learning difficulties in the zone. The methods used for data collection were face to face interviews, questionnaires for regular teachers and head teachers of various schools in Limuru division. The data collected revealed that motivation of slow learners by parents and teachers led to improvement in academic performance of slow learners in Limuru division. The parents, community and teachers, should be sensitized and encouraged to motivate slow learners in order for them to exploit their full potential. The researcher further recommends that the zonal education office should hold regular meetings with head teachers to sensitize them the importance of motivating slow learners and maintaining them in regular and special schools in Limuru division as they can become useful members of the family and the larger society
- ItemRelationship between cerebral palsy and academic performance of learners in special schools of Abogeta division Imenti south district, eastern province Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education Open and Distance Learning, 2010-11) Gitonga, Patrick KimathIn an attempt to investigate on the problem, the researcher identified Abogeta Division, Imenti South Eastern province form which special schools were selected as the research environment. The study was guided by research objectives which included establishing the effects of cerebral palsy in academic performance; to find out factors interfering with the teaching and learning of learners with cerebral palsy, assess the causes of cerebral palsy, establish the categories of cerebral palsy, establish the categories of cerebral palsy and management of learners with cerebral palsy in special schools. To gather more information on the issue, related literature was reviewed on areas such as effects of cerebral palsy on academic performance, factors interfering with the teaching and learning of learners with cerebral palsy and management procedures. Primary and secondary literature sources were used. In data collection, survey was adopted as the research design. This was used because a large group of despondence was targeted. Questionnaires were then developed, tested for validity, reliability. They were dispatched to the respondents who gave their views by answering the question items. The data collected were analyzed and presented quantitatively in form of tables, figures and graphs. Other data were presented qualitatively in descriptive form. The main findings included inadequate teaching and learning materials, inappropriate curriculum, and insufficient human resource among many others. It was established that inadequate provision of services provided by service providers impact greatly in the education of learners with cerebral palsy. In order to intervene for the above issues the researcher made more recommendation valuable to service providers and relevant stake holders involved with the cerebral palsy. The recommendations were also made.
- ItemTeachers attitude and academic performance of learners with learning disabilities in mundika zone Busia district- Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education Open and Distance Learning, 2008-12) Kabutha., Nelly N.This study illustrates the impact of teachers' attitudes on learners with learning disabilities. As a result of this deficiency, learners with learning disabilities have gone through unfriendly experiences that have affected their academic performance. In Kanjuu primary school, Ngariama zone Kirinyaga district. The study has therefore investigated some of the factors that lead to this negative attitude and how it can be changed in order to maintain the victims in the learning institution and help them to their best in academic performance. The study in brief has examined the problems faced by learner with learning disability analyzed the preventive measures as well as illustrated the role of the teachers as concerns learners with learning disability. The method used was survey design, a method commonly used in education research study or understand educational issues or problems. Data was collected through use of questionnaires and analyzed through the use of qualitative approach in order to provide answers to the research questions. The study found that majority of learners with disability experience problems due to lack of knowledgeable personnel as well as unconcerned teachers. Conclusively, the study urged teachers and all other stakeholders to develop positive attitude towards learners with disabilities. Provision of relevant and adequate materials was also recommended. Awareness meetings should be held more regularly in order to equip all concerned stakeholders with the necessary skills and intervention on how to deal with learners with learning disabilities.
