    Oil Exploration and Socio-Economic Development in Hoima District, Uganda

    This study sought to investigate the effect of oil exploration and socio-economic development in Hoima District. The study was guided by three objectives: to examine the effects of oil surveying on socio-economic development in Hoima District, to determine the effect of oil governance on socio-economic development in Hoima District and to assess the effect of oil sustainability on socio-economic development in Hoima District. In addition, the study was guided by the Resource Curse Theory by Auty (1993) and Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) Theory by Kretzmann & McKnight (1993). The study adopted a descriptive correlation survey design, and a mixed method approach in data collection, whereby both quantitative (survey questionnaire) and qualitative (key informant interview) approaches were used to elicit data from the study. Quantitative approach, however, was the main source of data, whilst qualitative approach served as a supplementary source of data. Data was analyzed at uni-variate, bi-variate and at multivariate level using means, standard deviation and Pearson Linear Correlation Coefficient (PLCC). From the study findings on the first objective of the study, the study concluded that majority of the respondents strongly agreed that by generating revenue for the government, creation of jobs, boosting the local economy, developing new infrastructure, and increasing tax revenue for Hoima district; then socio-economic development will be improved. On the second objective of the study, the study concluded that majority of the respondents strongly agreed that by being transparent and accountable for the monies got from oil, oil companies providing training and development opportunities for local workers, oil companies contributing to corporate social responsibility programs that benefit the local community, then, socio-economic development will be improved. Concerning objective three, the study concluded that majority of the respondents strongly agreed that by meeting the current needs of society without compromising the ability of future generations, ensuring that the benefits of oil are shared equitably among the population and that the environment is protected for future generations, then, socio-economic development will be improved. Lastly from the findings and conclusions, the study recommended that all the three constructs of oil exploration should be enhanced in Hoima district by the government of Uganda, the Hoima District Local Government, and oil companies operating in Hoima District developing and implementing policies and regulations that ensure that the benefits of oil surveying are shared equitably among the population and that the negative impacts of oil surveying are minimized, government of Uganda should also implement the national oil and gas policy in a transparent and accountable manner, civil society organizations should participate in the monitoring and evaluation of oil governance in Hoima District, the state should establish a multi-stakeholder oil governance forum in Hoima District to provide a platform for dialogue and coordination between the government. Moreover, government of Uganda should also develop national oil and gas policy that includes provisions for sustainable oil development and the government should sign fair Memorandum of understanding with oil companies, as well empowering National Management Authority to carry out its mandates.

    Risk Management and Project Completion of Bosaso International Airport Puntland, Somalia

    The study focused on risk management and project completion of Bosaso International Airport in Puntland, Somalia. The study was guided by the following objectives: i) to establish relationship between risk identification and project completion of Bosaso International Airport, ii) to assess the relationship between risk monitoring and control and project completion of Bosaso International Airport, and iii) to assess the relationship between risk analysis and project completion of Bosaso International Airport. The study employed a cross-sectional survey design, a mixed approach was used where both quantitative and qualitative approaches were used. The study population constituted 210 employees, were sample size was estimated as 132 from Krejcie and Morgan table of 1970. This study used both questionnaire and interview has the main data collection instruments. Findings from the study revealed that risk manager recognize and identify the root causes of risks and correlate them to their effects on project performance; findings on risk monitoring and control and project completion, it was found out that the company ensures installation of safety systems against any event that may lead to project delay; more so findings on risk analysis and project completion, it was found out that risk analysis is the action be taken towards the identified risks and threats. From the study findings it was concluded that the different ways in which risk management process improves Bosaso International Airport construction projects completion was identified on an extensive critical literature and empirical evidence from Construction Company using a quantitative and qualitative study results. The study also concluded that as a result of the validation process, the critical risks directly affecting the cost of Bosaso International Airport construction projects completion were found to be fluctuation of material prices; health and safety issues; bribery and corruption; material wastage; poor site management and supervision; and time overruns. The study concluded that the risk management system needs guides building construction practitioners in order to improve the performance of Bosaso International Airport construction projects completion as well as developing countries, without cost and time overruns while achieving optimal quality. From the study findings and conclusions the study recommended that construction professionals working at Bosaso International Airport project should adopt and implement the risk management system developed in this research. Building construction organisations that wish to apply this risk management system should engage its staff in construction risk management seminars, workshop or a training session to acquire all necessary knowledge and skills required to achieve its smooth implementation. At the early stage of building construction projects, it is essential that effective decisions on building construction budget, timely issuing of information, finalization of design and project management skills should be the main focus of the parties involved in project procurement process. This helps in eliminating future disputes and variations between parties during the construction stage. The training should also be an avenue where adequate guide will be given to construction workers in implementing the system. The assessment process should identify and analyse all loss exposures, and measure such loss exposures. This should guide in selection of technique or combination of techniques to handle each exposure.

    Beneficiaries Participation and Sustainability of Agricultural Intensification and Value Enhancing Support Project (Paiva-B) In Gitega Province, Burundi

    The study investigated whether or not participation of beneficiaries contributes to the sustainability of PAIVA-B project in Gitega province, Burundi. The study was based on three specific objectives: i) to measure the level of beneficiaries’ participation in PAIVA-B project cycle in Gitega province; ii) to measure the sustainability of PAIVA-B project in Gitega province and iii) to determine the relationship between beneficiaries’ participation and sustainability of PAIVAB project in Gitega province. The study used documentary review, questionnaire survey and interview collection methods while both quantitative and qualitative analysis methods were used. Data was collected from 359 respondents including 343 beneficiaries, 11 local leaders and 5 project officers. The findings showed that participation in project identification and in project implementation was assessed as high by the respondents while participation in project planning and in project M&E was assessed as moderate. As for project sustainability, the study indicated a moderate level of PAIVA-B sustainability. Of the sustainability indicators used in this study, empowerment was the only one that was assessed as high by respondents, while ownership and self-reliance were assessed as moderate. Furthermore, the study revealed that there is a moderate correlation between beneficiaries’ participation and project sustainability, with participation contributing up to 78.7% to sustainability. Participation in project identification was the biggest contributor to sustainability, followed by participation in project implementation, and then participation in M&E while participation in project planning represents the smallest contributor. The study established that no significant research work has been undertaken in the Burundian context on beneficiaries’ participation and sustainability of development projects. This study contributed to knowledge by enriching the literature on the subjects under study and Future researchers will find the results of this study resourceful when conducting studies in related areas. The study recommended that development actors should fully adopt participatory approaches in all their development interventions. Participatory development can help breaking the vicious cycle of unsustainability that characterizes many development projects. To strengthen the relationship between participation and sustainability, the study recommended carrying out an analysis of the project environment before implementing a project to identify obstacles that could prevent beneficiaries from participating fully in the project.

    Management Skills and Poverty Reduction Projects Success in Selected two Non-Governmental Organizations in Bosaso, Puntland, Somalia:

    The study aimed at examining the management skills and poverty reduction projects success for selected non-governmental organizations in Bosaso Puntland, Somalia. Objectively the study sought to; specifically examine the effect of conceptual skills on success of poverty reduction projects in selected DRC and SORERD, determine the effect of human relations skills on success of poverty reduction projects and finally assess the effect of technical skills on success of poverty reduction projects in selected DRC and SORERD in Bosaso. The data was collected both qualitative and quantitatively from 109 respondents through questionnaires and interviews. The study findings indicate that there was a significance effect of conceptual skills on success of poverty reduction projects. Secondly, it also shows a significant effect between human relations skills and success of poverty reduction projects. Thirdly, it shows a significant effect between technical skills and success of poverty reduction projects. The study concludes that improving the conceptual skills can induce projects success in NGOs in Bosaso while the reduction of conceptual skills frustrate success of poverty reduction projects secondly concludes that the human relation skills for the projects are fundamental in inducing the poverty reduction meaning that limited focus on the human relations skills can stifle success of the projects and thirdly the study conclude that technical skills are capable of inducing the success of poverty reduction projects, the study conclude that the technical skills can be improved for efficiency in the success for projects. The study recommend for the enhancement of conceptual skills with proper planning, managerial competence, resource mobilization and mobilization controls by the managerial staff need to be further developed and enhanced. Secondly the study recommend that human relations skills are essential, need to be developed for efficiency, there is need for a focal focus on Human skills (such as social skills, leading, motivation, conflict resolution and communication skills) and thirdly, the study recommend that management skills are essential and need to be developed in facilitating the development for the professional knowledge that is needed for the management efficiency in the organization

    Employee motivation and project success of NGOS in Mogadishu-Somalia

    This study investigated the role played by employee motivation and project success of NGOs in Mogadishu, Somalia. The study was motivated by the fact that these projects were reported to have been going through a difficult time in terms of their performance. The objectives of the study were to 1) Detei1.nine the level of employee motivation at selected NGOs in Mogadishu, Somalia. 2). Identify the relationship between employee motivation and project success at selected NGOs in Mogadishu, Somalia. The design adopted was on quantitative approach using this method; the researcher used a structured questionnaire ( close ended). A research population of 100 was identified and a sample size of 80 respondents was computed using the Slovene's fonnula. In selecting the respondents the researcher used simple random sampling and purposive sampling techniques. From the findings it was intended to identify the relationship between employee motivation and project success in selected NGO's Mogadishu-Somalia. It was guided by two specific objectives 1) to determine the level of employee motivation at selected NGOs in Mogadishu, Somalia. II) To identify the relationship between employee motivation and project success at selected NGOs in Mogadishu, Somalia. For data analysis, the study employed Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) to provide means and standard deviation. i) Salary pay (mean index= 3. 7 4, stander deviation. = 1.1688); ii) Incentive (mean index= 3.85, stander deviation.= 1.054). Results using person's correlation found that employee motivation is moderate correlated with; i) on salary pay= 0.408, sig= 0.000. Also project success has strong correlation with, ii) incentive pay= 0.572, sig=0.000; finally the two variables, employee motivation and project success have strong correlation with 0.593.
