Abstract
The the aim of the research was to analyze, design and implement a medical diagnosis system to
supplement the efforts of the human physicians save alone the constrained workforce,
The following were the specific objectives that the study sought to address.
(i) The study aimed at designing an expert system in medical diagnosis of human ailments
(ii) The study identified a collective knowledge domain that was used in the generation of a
standardized knowledge base.
(iii) Scientific production rules were formulated and integrated with an inference engine that
query the knowledge base
(iv) The study aimed at designing a medical software prototype that diagnoses and provides
a customized treatment solution to minor illnesses
The study was carried out and a medical expert system used in the diagnosis of tropical human
illness was developed.
The research narrowed its findings to tropical malaria as major human threat.
The study’s key area of concern was Uganda as a tropical country and in particular in Mbale
district where Mbale regional hospital was the case study
Malaria patients were the main focus group of the study with a few doctors, nurses and local
leaders
