Abstract
The purpose of the study was to establish the relationship of rewards and performance of employees in selected Banks in Kampala Uganda. The problem of this study was poor employee performance in selected banks of Kampala Uganda. The study objectives were; to assess the relationship of extrinsic rewards and employee performance, examine the relationship of intrinsic rewards and employee performance, and to establish the effects of rewards and employee performance in banking sector. The study adopted a descriptive research design that was both quantitative and qualitative. Data was collected using questionnaires from 117 respondents who are employees of selected banks while qualitative data was collected from 08 respondents through interviews with bank managers. The data was analyzed using frequency tables, percentages, Pearson’s Linear Correlation Coefficients, and regression model. The hypotheses were tested using p-value at the 5% significance level. The results from the study indicate that there is a significant positive relationship between reward system and employee performance in selected banks in Kampala, Uganda at the 5% significance level. The results also established that there is a significant positive relationship between intrinsic rewards and employee performance in selected banks in Kampala, Uganda at the 5% significance level. The results further show that there is a significant positive relationship between extrinsic rewards and employee performance in selected banks in Kampala, Uganda at the 5% significance level. The study concludes that reward system has significant positive relationship with employee performance in selected banks in Kampala, Uganda. The study also concludes that intrinsic and extrinsic rewards significantly relate with employee performance in selected banks in Kampala, Uganda. The study recommends that it is imperative for banks to ensure that they not only pay competitive and attractive salaries, but they must also make sure to reward performance in an open and fair manner. The study finally recommends that banks should ensure that they pay salaries as at when due and offer promotions as incentives for performance and recognize hardworking employees for banks to be able to achieve their goals and objective.
