- ItemCultural practices as hindrance to the enjoyment of women's rights a female genital mutilation perspective(Kampala International University.College of Law, 2013-07) Agnes, NabaggalaThis study addresses the concept of Female Genital Mutilation as one of the harmful cultural practices that make it difficulty for women and girls to fully enjoy their human rights. It will focus on the meaning and different types of female genital mutilation, procedure, the different beliefs that support its continuation, experiences of women involved before and after the mutilation and the human rights that are violated by the practice of female genital mutilation. The study further indicates that perceptions held by those who are in favour of the practice are based on a number of motivating factors, tradition topping the list. That there are various efforts that are being employed by the international community as well governments and local communities to eliminate the tradition in areas where it is still practiced. As a result of these efforts, there has been a change in the communities; however the tradition has not yet been wholly eliminated.
