    Family patriarchy, gender differences and girl child education:

    This study set out to investigate family patriarchy and gender differences on girl child educational attainment in Kapsabet division. The following objectives guided the study; To establish the ways in which patriarchy has affected enrollment of girls in schools, to make a comparison of the rate of school dropout by sex, to establish the distribution of teachers by sex in primary schools, to establish and make a comparison of the student leadership in primary schools by sex, to investigate the influence of patriarchy on gender related preferences of boy child education, to compare learners performance in KCPE 2007 by sex, the research instruments used in the study was a questionnaire. Findings In the study it was found that the drop out rate fir girls is higher than the drop out rate for boys. This is because the girls are often subjected to various challenges like being overworked more at home than the boys. Most of the work at home traditionally was done by the girls, the parents of today are still practicing this mentality and this has led the girls to dropping out of schools more than the boys as they do not have time to do their home work and to revise whatever they have learnt at school. On the other hand, dropout rate for boys is lower than that of girls because traditionally they are favored and are exempted from the heavy work at home. Also in the study it was found that the possible causes for the poor performance of the girl child in academics is majorly caused by the men dominated society. In the study it found that the society requires the girls to prepare for simple jobs like cooking, secretarial jobs and know how to take care of a husband. Because of these mentality girls has ended up losing concentration in academics. The study revealed that even the teachers have ignored the assistance of the girl child but instead have leaned to the boys. Comments and mentalities held by the parents and the society are men dominated and this has led to the rise in poor performance of the girls. Recommendations were made like the government should provide more funds channeled in the education and sensitization of the rural population about the importance of children education irrespective of the gender equally.
