    Monitoring and evaluation practices and the performance of National Non-Governmental Organizations fighting HIV/AIDS in Rwanda

    The study focused on the monitoring and evaluation practices and the performance of national NGOs fighting HIV/AIDS in Rwanda. The study was carried out under four objectives, namely determination of the profile of the respondents; to establish the level of monitoring and evaluation practices in use in selected NGO5, to determine the level of organizational performance of selected national NGOs fighting HIV and AIDS in Rwanda and to explore the relationship between the level of monitoring and evaluation practices and the level of organizational performance. The research design of the present study was descriptive and correlational. The research methodology behind this research was quantitative research approach and the sample of 119 respondents from 8 national NGO5. The method used in sampling was a simple random sampling which helped to get the respondents who might provide reliable data. The empirical data were collected through questionnaires. According to the first objective, the research determined the demographic characteristics of respondents. The findings revealed that male respondents outnumbered female respondents with the percentage of 65.5°k and 34.5% respectively. The majority of the respondents (67.2%) have served the organization for a period which is between 3 and 5 years; in terms of the level of education, the findings revealed that most of the respondents (67.2%) hold a Bachelor’s degree; concerning the field of the study; the findings revealed that the majority of respondents (39.5%) have studied the social sciences and in terms of the position held; the findings revealed that the majority of the respondents (72.3%) are the professional staff in the organization they are serving. With respect to the second objective, the findings revealed that there are various monitoring and evaluation practices which are effectively used in the selected national NGO5 fighting HIV/AIDS in Rwanda. The findings revealed that the level of these monitoring and evaluation practices is moderate with an average mean of 2.38. As far as the third objective is concerned; the findings revealed that there is a moderate level of organizational performance of selected national NGOs with an average mean of 2.48. The findings also indicated a positive significant relationship and positive significant effect on regression between the level of monitoring and evaluation practices and the level of organizational performance, since the significance values were less than or equal to 0.01, which is the level of significance required to declare a significant relationship.
