    The effects of tea production on the socio-economic development of small holder farmers of Kiburara parish in Hakibale sub county Kabarole district

    The study looked at the Effects of tea production on the socio-economic development of small holder farmers of Kiburara parish in Hakibale sub county Kabarole district. It was guided by the following objectives; to determine the Effects of tea production on the social-economic development of smallholder farmers of Kiburara Parish, Hakibale Sub County To determine the Effects of tea production on the economic development of Kiburara Parish Hakibale Sub County To determine the Effects of tea production on the environmental development of Kiburara parish Hakibale Sub County, hence providing insight into the state. A descriptive survey design was used as the research methodology for the study. A valid and reliable structured questionnaire was used as the principal research instrument. An interview was also used to collect the data. The data of interest in the study was on tea productions socio Effects, economic Effects and negative Effects on both socio and economic developments of small holder farmers and there mitigation measures. The findings of the research revealed that tea production in Hakibale Sub County had positive economic Effects on smallholders as good housing, accessibility to adequate food, education, acquiring assets such as bicycles, vehicles amongst others. However negative Effects like increased school dropout cases, migrating from rural to urban areas and inadequate food amongst farmers were also realized. The researcher therefore concluded that tea production had both positive and negative socio-economic Effects on smallholder farmers that’s to say positive Effects such as road infrastructure development, improved social status in society, acquired assets like vehicles, bicycles and negative socioeconomic Effects like food shortage, poverty, children dropping out of school to carry and sell tea, cutting of trees and impaired accessibility to educational and health services. The researcher therefore recommended that extension services and support to the farmers from factories and other stakeholders should be enhanced and the government should come up and support the small scale tea producers by extending credit services and other inputs such as fertilizers to increase on tea productivity per acre.
