    Farming in wetlands and developmental degradation

    The study set out to establish the effects of farming in wetlands and on environment, Bukedea Sub County, Bukedea District. The study was guided by the following between farming in wetlands and environmental degredation, in Bukedea sub-county, Bukedea District. The specific objectives were: To establish the importance of wetlands in Bukedea Sub County, Bukedea District, To find out how farming in wetlands affect the environment in Bukedea Sub County, Bukedea District and To determine various measures of protecting the environment in Bukedea Sub County, Bukedea District. The Research Questions were: What are the importance of wetland conservation in Bukedea Sub County, Bukedea District, What are the effects of farming in wetlands in Bukedea Sub County, Bukedea District, The gaps in the literature review were the positive and negative effects of farming on wetlands such as increased incomes and standard of living and the destabilization of the eco-system, destruction of aquatic life and increased soil erosion thus leading to soil infertility. The research design was qualitative; however, quantitative approach was also used. Both probability and non-probability sampling research techniques were used to allow comparison of data because the respondents chosen were fairly knowledgeable about the subject. Questionnaires were developed and focus group discussions were conducted to get the data. The study revealed that: Wetland management is one of the decentralized functions of local governments and hence under their charge. There is a need to provide incentives for districts to discharge their wetland management responsibilities as stipulated in the Local Government Act 1995. Accordingly, the sub-sector will strengthen linkages with local governments and urban authorities both at district and sub-district levels, and build their capacities to manage wetland resources sustainably. There is need to develop, strengthen and ope rationalize comprehensive wetlands legislation and enforcement structures to ensure sustainability and resolve ownership issues. The appropriate policies, laws, procedures and regulations will be enforced to curtail degradation of wetland resources.
