The study was guided by the following objectives. To determine the level of community participation in projects implemented in rural area. To assess the effect of local community participation on projects sustainability. To find out successful project implemented in rural area. The research design was descriptive; data were collected between November and December 2010, from both primary and secondary sources using questionnaires and interview guides, to collect primary data from a sample size of 80 respondents out of 100 respondents. Cross tabulation (frequencies) was used to analyze data. The study established from majority of the respondents that community didn’t participate in projects implemented by INGO5 in terms of decision, design, implementation, and satisfaction. The training may be offered but it is not in line with the needs of the community, it will not have any impact on project implementation and participation. The study concluded that the most successful projects implemented by NGOs were education and health projects. And lastly the study recommends that INGOs should improve economic well-being of the communities, motivate the community participation in the projects, and establish goals and measures for determining project design.
