The specific objective of the study were to investigate the impact of guidance and counseling on academic performance of learners with mental retardation children; identify the methods of counseling that are effective on mentally retarded children; and identify the causes of mental retardation children . The methods used for data collection were questionnaires to the pupils and interviews with the teachers. The findings of the study revealed that the counseling helps alleviate the stigmas and misconceptions associated with the slow learning level of mental functioning. Guidance and counseling help all students to grow with self-understanding, developing interpersonal problems solving and decision making skills and occupational awareness. The study recommended that; guidance and counseling should be part of the curriculum in all schools of Kenya
