    The impact of poverty on economic development, case study; Boosaaso District, Puntland State of Somalia

    The region around Bosaaso is prone to poverty, since the district host a lot of people from south central Somalia. This poverty led to allot of impact on economic development of the district and entire region. The purpose of this study was to analyze how poverty affects the economic development of the people in Boosaaso district. It drew an insight on how these cases of poverty, from lack of active government, civil wars and over population. That affects the economic lives of the people, particularly in Boosaaso district. This research is aimed at identifying the causes of poverty and economical development, the impact of this poverty on economic development in boosaaso district Puntland, Somalia. And to come up with strategies through which the problem of poverty can eliminated from the region. Findings revealed that there were different causes of poverty ‘in boosaaso district. The most prevalent causes included lack of active government, over population, diseases. Government response to the poverty situation in boosaaso district was counterproductive. There were several economic effects of poverty in the people of boosaaso district, included, discouragement of investment, discouragement of small scale business traders, and unemployment. It was concluded that there is three types of poverty in boosaaso district absolute poverty, relative poverty and chronic poverty. The problem could be solved by sensitization, reconciliation and peacekeeping. It was recommended that there is need to address the issues that led to poverty in the area that is by increasing personal income, controlling over population, provision of foreign aid, and government provide basic needs of services so that many people in boosaaso district get basic needs and purchasing power of the people
