    A review of the welfare principle and its applicability in Uganda.

    This is an exploratory study that sought to analyze the law and the causes of the gaps between the policy advocacy work of the child welfare related issues at the national level and the realities of the children under custody. The study was designed to examine the applicability of the welfare principles, a policy advocacy work aimed at bettering the position of the children and its linkages with child survival and benefits to make recommendation for improvement. The study was based on the qualitative method of data collection and analysis. Data was collected from six (6) key informants from Federation of Uganda Women Lawyers (FIDA), Uganda Children Rights NGO Network (UCRNN) and (ANPPCAN). It is also based on secondary data from past literature on the subject and from the above NGOs as well as Libraries. The research focuses on the circumstances and the laws governing welfare principles and the legalities taken in to account while resolving the issues of the applicability of the principle during adoption, maintenance and custody of the child as supported by both National and International legislative and the institutional frameworks. It also discusses the problems experienced in dealing with the laws on welfare principle; it provides possible interventions to streamline cases of welfare principle and its applicability in Uganda.
