    parents’ involvement in education and academic performance of students in selected secondary schools in Kisii South District, Kenya

    The purpose of the study was to establish the relationship between parent’s involvement in education and academic performance of students. The objectives were: To establish the relationship between parents’ participation in education and academic performance of the students, to establish the relationship between parents’ attitude towards education and students’ academic performance, to establish the relationship between parents’ income and academic performance. The researcher used descriptive survey design and both qualitative and quantitative designs were used to cover a large sample. The researcher used convenient sampling technique to select a sample of 90 out the target population of 120 parents. (RN Krejcie and D. W Morgan (1970)). The researcher used questionnaire instrument to collect data from the respondents. Data was analyzed using frequency tables and Pearson correlations. The findings indicated that majority of the parents (mean 3.42) don’t provide basic needs to the students. The findings also indicated that most of the parents have negative attitude towards education (mean 3.13). The findings also indicated that parents’ income level has nothing to do with students’ academic performance (mean 3.90). The researcher recommended that parents to fully participate in their children’s academic performance by visiting them at school to monitor their progress, attending school meetings to discuss issues related to their children academic performance with teachers. Parents to provide basic needs to their children and have a good relationship with them all the time in order to realize positive academic performance. The government to organize seminars to sensitize the parents the importance of participating in school activities regularly. School authorities to hold regular meetings with school parents to discuss on how to assist students to perform well in the national examination. The government should increase the amount offered by bursaries to help those parents who are financially handicapped to avoid students dropping out of schools.
