(Kampala International University, School of Health Sciences, 2019-04) Kalule, David
The study was a cross-sectional descriptive design which investigated factors associated with adherence to MDR-TB medication at Mukono Health Center IV in Mukono district, Uganda. The estimation of sample size was done using Sloven’s formula, 100 participants were selected of which 67% were females and 33% males. Data was analyzed using Microsoft excel and presented using tables, charts and graphs. The study found that of the 67% females, 60% had knowledge on adherence to MDR-TB while of the 33% males, 45% had knowledge on MDR-TB. Family support was an important social factor that contributed to MDR-TB medication adherence since 54% had treatments observed by a family member. Distance from health facility affected adherence of 25% of the respondents and 30% of the respondents who did not receive enough patient-health provider time affected 25% of the respondents when they experienced medication side effects. The study concluded that majority of respondents had knowledge on adherence to MDR-TB treatment, family support was an important social factor associated with adherence and distance from the hospital and contact time between patient and health practitioner were vital health facility related factors associated with adherence. The study also recommended that citizens should be educated on MDR-TB during initiation of treatment in order to improve patient support hence improving adherence, follow up of patients who live far from the health facility, appropriately counselling for patients and further research should be conducted on social factors affecting adherence considering it plays a very vital role in the treatment process
