    Survival of the sex worker on the roadside in Makindye Division in Kampala City

    This study investigated the ‘survival of the sex worker on the roadside in Makindye Division in Kampala City’. This was after the realisation that the liberalisation and rapid urbanisation of Kampala City have left tens of thousands of the city residents in squalid conditions where abject and absolute poverty rule. The study specifically sought to achieve the following objectives: to establish the genesis of roadside sex workers in Makindye Division in Kampala City; to examine the role of roadside sex workers in the socio-economic transformation of Makindye Division in Kampala City; and to find out the problems fhced by roadside sex workers in Makindye Division in Kampala City. To achieve the set objectives, the study was guided by the following research questions: what is the genesis of roadside sex workers in Makindye Division in Kampala City? What role do roadside sex workers play in the socio-economic transformation of Makindye Division in Kampala City? What problems do roadside sex workers in Makindye Division in Kampala Cityface? The study design took the form of a case study of survival of the sex worker on the roadside in Makindye Division in Kampala City where roadside sex workers are remarkably visible. The study also involved purposive sampling in which.the data sought were qualitative. A sample of 40 respondents was purposively sampled for the study. These included 15 sex workers, five local leaders, five opinion leaders, and 15 buyers of sex. The data were collected using interviews and observations for primary data and documents analysis for secondary data. The data were analysed qualitatively through content analysis and the literal description and narrations of the emerging issues out of which opinions and conclusions were drawn.The study established that the growth of roadside sex workers in Makindye Division in Kampala Cityis based on a multiple of fhctors that include road junctions. community initiative, growth pole centres, poverty and unemployment, and the informalisation of the economy among others. The study also revealed that roadside sex work was employing so many youths inMakindye Division in Kampala City. Further, roadside sex work was also found to be a source of revenue, tool for poverty reduction, market for services and source of empowerment for both the youths and women. The study has also shown that high taxes, inadequate capital, weather vagaries, poor sanitation and hygiene, and inadequate facilities/infrastructure are the major problems faced by roadside sex workers in Makindye Division in Kampala City. The study concludes by noting that roadside sex workers were a reflection of a multiple of socio-economic
