    An assessment on the impact of gender based violence in Peche Division Uganda

    Gender based violence (GBV) is common and appears to have escalated in Gulu district for decades and is considered one of the most hidden form of human right abuses. In view of this a study was conducted to investigate the impact of Gender-based violence in Peche Division-Gulu Municipality. The research had some objectives which it aimed to achieve, among which are: To identify the forms of Gender-based violence in Peche Division, to examine the causes of Gender-based violence in Peche Division, to establish the effects of Gender-based violence on both the survivors and the society at large. Therefore, to achieve this, questionnaires were used and interviews were conducted as a source of primary data. A total of 70 respondents were drawn from Peche division, these were obtained using the slovin’s formula. Descriptive methods such as percentage distribution and frequency distribution were used. The findings were then presented in tables and discussed. It was established that gender based violence is common and appears to have escalated in the district of Gulu and most especially Peche Division. There were many forms of GBV, but the common ones included physical violence, domestic violence, sexual violence, verbal violence, psychological violence forced marriage and denial of access to partners’ earnings among others. Employment of a multi-sectoral approach, Naming, Telephone Hotlines, Sensitization and addressing of norms, attitudes and beliefs of culture can help curb down gender based violence.
