    Social Media and Students’ Study Habits in Secondary Schools in Bukwo District, Uganda

    The study investigated the relationship between social media and students’ study habits in secondary schools in Bukwo District, Uganda. To achieve the purpose of the study set and these included; To determine the frequency of use and purpose of social media, to examine the study habits of students’ in secondary schools in Bukwo District and to establish the relationship between social media and students’ study habits in secondary schools in Bukwo District. The study employed descriptive correlation design involving qualitative and quantitative approaches. The sample size was 375 derived from a population of 5900. Simple random sampling technique was use to select the respondents. Self-administered questionnaires and interview guide were used as research instruments. Validity and reliability of the instruments were determined through Content Validity Index and test and retest respectively. Data analysis was done using frequencies and percentages, mean and standard deviation and Pearson Linear Correlation Coefficient at 0.05 level of significance. The research findings indicated that the frequency of use and purpose of social media is high (mean of 2,91). Among the social media platforms that is commonly use by students is facebook which is high (mean of 3.75). The study habits of students’ was good (mean of 3.18). The correlation results indicate that social media have a significant relationship with students’ study habits and this was justified by r= 0 .985 and the R2 value of 0.985 at the significance level of 0.000. The study concluded that the frequency of use and purpose of social media is high. Most students have cell phones and have access to different social media platforms. The study habits of students’ in secondary schools was good. Students can still improve their study habits. There is a significant relationship between social media and students’ study habits. Social media affects students’ study habits. The study recommended that different schools in Bukwo District should equip teachers with necessary skills in life coaching skills to enable the teachers to counsel the students that may help to curb on spending more hours in social media. Secondary schools administrators should implement strict laws on access of social media. Parents must monitor their children on how they use and access social media.
