    Factors academic performance in mathematics among learners with specific learning difficulties: a case study of lugari central zone, Lugari district Kenya

    A Study on challenges and Academic performance in Mathematics among learners with specific learning difficulties. The general aim of study was to find out factors that lead to poor performance among learners with specific learning difficulties in mathematics. The objectives of the study were to: investigate the general attitude of teachers towards learners with specific learning difficulties, identify teaching approaches used by teachers in teaching mathematics, find out the challenges of implementing free primary education and to find out strategies of improving performance of mathematics among learners with specific learning difficulties. It is observed that learners with specific learning difficulties in public primary schools in Lugari Central Zone undergo through many challenges. The instrument of data collection was questionnaire. Data collection as analyzed using statistical frequency distributions and presented using tabulations. The researcher found out that the general attitudes of teachers towards learners with specific disabilities in mathematics is negative. The researcher also found out that there are some resources that can be used in teaching mathematics in schools. He highlighted on some of the intervention measures to be taken to reduce the implications. The researcher used simple collection of data from the sample of a number of schools. The conclusion was that negative attitude among teachers and learners, inadequate educational resources, poor teaching and learning approaches, rigid curriculum, lack of personnel and high enrollment due to free primary education lead to the performance of learners with specific learning disabilities in mathematics mostly in public primary schools the researcher recommended Guidance and counseling of learners with specific learning difficulties, parents, teachers and community to suppress the negative attitude, training of more teachers who can handle learners with specific learning difficulties and employing of more personnel and start new schools for the introduction
