The effect of local government expenditure on the health sector performance in Bushenyi district Uganda
(Kampala International University, College of Economics and Management, 2016-06) Mugerwa, Hamudane
The study analyzed the effect of local government expenditure on the health sector performance in Bushenyi district. The specific objectives of the study were; to examine the effect of local government expenditure on maternal mortality rate, to examine the effect of local government expenditure on infant mortality rate and to examine the effect of local government expenditure on the number of doctors in Bushenyi district. The study used quantitative data and information from secondary sources to provide an in depth understanding of the concepts under study. The researcher used Time series analysis and ordinary least squares regression in analyzing data and investigating the properties inherent in the data. The study found out that a unit increase in the Local Government Expenditure on average reduces maternal mortality rate by 3685 L53 units and infant mortality rate by 88752.961 units. And a unit increase in the local government expenditure on average doctors will increase on the efforts and number of doctors by 124075.8 units. The researcher strongly recommends that the Local Government should allocate more money to the health centers in district targeting maternal patients; this can be through buying new equipment used on patients and even expanding on maternity wards to accommodate all the maternity patients The Local Government should increase the salaries of the health workers and this can improve on their performance levels and attitude towards patients in different hospitals and health centers in the district.
