    Income generating activities and household standard of living in Birniwa local government area of Jigawa state, Nigeria

    income generating activities are the most important determinant of living standard. For many people, the activity they engaged in is the main source of their income, especially in the poorest countries. Income generating related activities are the most frequent reasons for families to be out of or fall into poverty. A relationship between income generating activities and households standards of living was established in the study. The study was carried out based on three specific objectives, that is, i) investigating the income generating activities in Birniwa local government area of Jigawa state, Nigeria ii) ascertaining the level of households standard of living and, iii) establishing relationship between income generating activities and households standards of Hying. The independent variable (income generating activities) has two indicators, that is, nature of the activities and duration of the activities. The dependent variable (households standard of living) is having four indicators, and these are; education, housing, income and health. Descriptive correlation design was used to determine the relationship between variables, testing of hypothesis and in development of generalizations. A sample size of 384 respondents were chosen from a population of 142,329 people, and a questionnaire was used in gathering data from the respondents. The findings from the respondent Profiles revealed that, majority of them were males whose ages ranged from 30-39 years, and majority were self employed with a secondary school qualifications. The study’s findings revealed that, the extent of income generating activities in Birniwa local government area of Jigawa state, Nigeria is generally high and this was indicated by the overall mean of 3.10. The study also revealed that the level of standard of living is also generally high and this was indicated by the overall mean of 2.73. The findings also revealed a positive relationship between income generating activities and households standard of living in Birniwa local government area of Jigawa state, Nigeria because the significance value of (0.000) was less than 0.05, implying that the availability of income generating activities improved on the level of household standard of living in Birniwa local government area of Jigawa state Nigeria.
