- ItemThe performance of girl-child in Universal Primary Education schools :a case of Kabarole District Uganda(Kampala International University. College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2010-09) Murungi, JacklineThe study was conducted in Sub Counties of Bukuuku, Kisomoro and East Division, Fort Portal Municipality, Kabarole District. The area of study was purposively sampled for relative representation and manageable geographical scope. The study focused on three—folds; causes, risks and effectiveness of UPE policy strategies to address the variation in academic performance of the Girl-Child. Descriptive research applied questionnaires and interview guide for an in-depth assessment with data edited, coded and tabulated into statistical tables. The findings indicated (52%) social-cultural practices, (21°k) parental negative attitude, (10%) non-conducive school environment and (17°h) economic status, as causes of variation in academic performance of the Girl-Child. Results revealed that, there are cross-cutting strategies implemented to address the causes for the variation in academic performance that included; (19%) of schools applied hygiene practices, (15%) learners sensitized on hygiene, (10%) textbooks placed in learners’ hands, (8%) qualified teachers deployed. The findings showed (4%) schools achieved required 60% Pupil Teachers Ratio for P1- P 3, (7%) Community participation, (4%) schools use Thematic Curriculum Materials and (13%) Local Government and School Management Committee supervised Head Teachers.In conclusion, the social-cultural context influenced parents and community attitude were inter-linked causes for the variation in academic performance. The risks included; teacher’s diminished motivation and girls’ dropout of school. Ministry of Education and Sports should strengthen Non Governmental Organizations to contribute towards the establishment of bathing rooms to cater for their specific gender needs
