    Drug abuse and students violent strikes in western Uganda: (a case study of Nyabushozi county, Kiruhuura district)

    The purpose of this study was to find out the relationship between drug abuse and student unrest in the selected secondary schools of Uganda. Specific objectives of the study were to: Investigate the find out the causes of drag abuse in secondary schools, find out the causes of student violent strikes in secondary schools, and to find out the relationship between drug abuse and violent strikes in secondary schools of Uganda. The methods used for data collection were questionnaires to the students, interviews with the teachers and with_ community members. The findings revealed by 62.5% of respondents agreed that Poverty in the home may result in children committing crimes frequently associated with drug use, another 87.5% of respondents agreed that presence of gang or group membership or peer group pressure causes them to engage in _violet strikes and 50% of respondents agreed that drugs can also act as a catalyst in aggressive individuals who are prone to violent behavior as a result of taking them. The study recommended that: Government, non-government organizations and schools should revisit the schools' mission statement. School safety and violence prevention should be a part of the educational goals of the district. Establish a violence prevention team. The team should consist of students, staff, board members, parents, community members, law enforcement, administrators, and counselors. Set goals for the district. These goals must be realistic and meaningful. This would provide direction for the violence prevention team. The results of the survey would aid in setting the specific goals for the violence prevention program. Develop a violence prevention plan. The plan should include guidelines for the curriculum, the physical plant, social issues, cultural concerns, economics of the district, the code of conduct, student and staff concerns, and the community.
