    The Social-Economic Status of Parents and the Academic Performance Of students In Secondary Schools in Kitovu Parish Masaka District

    This research was to analyze the causes of poor academic performance in Kitovu parish Masaka District and help the students to develop insight and suggest how to improve on their academic performance. The study was guided by specific objectively respectively that is; to identify and test the possible socio-economic problems and analyze the measures that have been put forward by the government to reduce the socio-economic.problems affecting the academic performance of the students in Kitovu parish Masaka district. Research questions were developed out of research problem. For example; How do the socio-economic problems affect the students performance? And the study involved both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection. Under the study qualitative method a key informants' interview guide was employed to obtain information from the students in and out of school. The qualitative method involved use of a questionnaire Note that the study was conducted in the eight parishes in Masaka district and 104 respondents reported that poverty was the main cause of socio-economic problems contributing to poor academic performance of the students in Kitovu Parish Masaka district. Emphasis should be put on training of parents and the teachers on parenting skills for the acquisition of the relevant knowledge and the skills to deal with the students because each student is absolutely unique from the other and uphold different professional manners.
