    Factors affecting enrollment of Mentally Challenged Learners in an Inclusive Setting of Kakuzi Zone Thika District Central Province Kenya.

    A study on the factors affecting the enrollment of mentally challenged learners in an inclusive setting as carried out in Kakuzi zone. The objectives of the study were to investigate whether there are any extemal support services provided to learners with mental challenges in an inclusive setting, to find out there is any school programme especially suited for mentally challenged learners, to find out the ctors affecting the enrolment of mentally challenged learners and to identify the adaptations made for entally challenged learners study was carried out in kakuzi zone Thika district in Kenya which was ,arded by mitubiri zone, ithanga zone, juja zone and machakos zone. The study employed a ,scriptive survey research design to collect both qualitative and quantitative data. The researcher used nple random sampling procedure to get her respondents. A sample size of 18 regular teachers and six ad teachers was used . the instrument of data collection were questionnaires for both teachers and ad teachers. The findings of the study were that teacher's attitude towards mentally challenged learners , lack of support services, lack of materials and enough trained teachers to handle mental endicap learners affect the enrolment of mentally challenged learner's in inclusive setting. This is cause 67% are of respondents had negative attitude which showed that the mental handicaps are glected and forgotten. Teachers have poor interaction with the learners, lack of support from mmunity, government and non-governmental organization. The researchers recommended that the llipment and facilities should be provided to meet the needs of learners with mental handicap. Train ,re personnel and there should be sensitization to teachers and community about education of mental 1dicapped learners. conclusion ignorance seem to be the major contributing factor and the driving force making way for ter factors such as lack of support from community , government and non governmental organization vards learning of the learners with mental challenges. Lack of equipment, facilities and materials was >ther cause of poor enrolment of the learners with mental challenges.
