- ItemNyamagabe local government’s contribution to the promotion of piped water supply services in rural areas:(Kampala International University, College of Humanities and social sciences., 2011-09) Nsengumuremyi, DamienThe study was Nyamagabe Local Government’s Contribution to the Promotion of Piped Water Services in Rural Areas. It was carried out under three objectives, namely identifying the existing nature of drinkable water distribution in Nyamagabe district; examining the interventions of Nyamagabe authorities in the provision of piped water within the district; and investigating water funding capacity available in Nyamagabe district. From methodological perspective, the research design of the study was a descriptive survey research design. The study was conducted through both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed using Microsoft Office Excel programme to generate charts and frequency tables. The sample size of the population included 389 people from 5 administrative sectors. The findings indicate that Nyamagabe local government has, to some extent, contributed to the promotion of piped water supply services within the district. Essentially, the bulk of households in the district have improved access to piped water. In the same way, the households can get potable water on intermittent basis since supply continuity is mostly fair. Besides, the bulk of households consume water which is quantitatively and qualitatively acceptable and they use 30mm or less round trips to collect it. Realistically, these achievements spring from the role played by local authorities through various activities such as engaging the community in water supply cycle, by facilitating water funding arrangements, by enhancing private sector investment, by organizing water sector, to mention but a few. The findings show that Nyamagabe district maintains reasonable water funding capacity. The main financial challenges encountered are funds delay and funds deficiency. The major sources of funds include ubudehe, CDF and WSF. Nyamagabe local government has to make more efforts in conjunction with all water stakeholders ranging from water users to donors to halve the proportion (40 % )of households without improved access to piped w water.
