Antimicrobial sensitivity test, phytochemical analysis and toxicity studies of croton macrostachyus (hochst. ex delile), euphorbiaceae, methanolic root bark extract
(Kampala International University.school of health science, 2012-08) Paschal, Oswald
Human benefit from plants secondary metabolites in several ways, including treatment and prevention of diseases. The study was carried out to identifY different phytochemicals which are present in Croton macrostachyus root bark methanolic extract, to determinethe antimicrobial activities of the extract and to test for the acute toxicity effect of the extract of root bark of C.macrostachyus. This study was done at Kampala International University, western campus. The extraction was done by using methanol 70% , out of 500gm of dried crude powdered of C.macrostachyusunderwent extraction 7.29% of crude drug was isolated. The phytochemical studies showed the presence of tannins, alkaloids, cardiac glycosides and anthraquinine. The antimicrobial susceptibility test was done on methanolic root bark extract of C.macrostachyusand showed no antimicrobial activities against S.aureus and E. coli. Orally ingestion of different concentration of the crude dmg does not produce general acute toxicity in tested rats.Further studies should be set in place to determine the activities of the phytochemicals in vivo
