Regulation of equity markets in Uganda: the role of the capital market authority in investor Protection
(Kampala international international: School Of Law, 2013-06) Rene, Edwin Achieng
This dissertation examines the legal and commercial implications of Government intervention for investor protection in Uganda's equity market. It begins by discussing the rationale of the regulation and impo1iance of investor protection in the development of equity markets and capital markets as a whole. The dissertation further examines the operation of the Capital Markets Authority as the regulatory agency and the distribution of regulatory responsibility among the regulatory organs. The study takes a step-by-step tour of the primary and secondary markets and• examines the legislation related to the equities markets and its impact on investor protection. The study creates a link between capital market development and investor protection and looks at the conflict between the regulated and free markets. It highlights contradictions and constraints to market development and how they affect investor protection. It also sets out supporting systems and gives recommendations for the development of an efficient capital market, with emphasis on equities markets. While this research is primarily concerned with Uganda's equity markets, reference is made to other markets to fill the gaps left by the new capital markets regime.
