The research project consists of five chapters. Chapter one, deals with the background history of East African Community in order to provide a better understanding of the course of events. It highlights some of the prevailing outlook on the impact of the Common Market in Burundi. Chapter two provides the link between the topic and the International Trade Law which is the area of specialization of the researcher. Chapter three surveys a descriptive history of other Common Market spaces including Burundi but which have a dismally poor implementation record while characterized by ambitious targets. It also analyzes the main elements of the EAC Common Market which are the so called “four freedoms” involving free movement of goods, labour, services and capital. Thus, it assesses the compliance of Burundi relatively to employment and social security matters. Chapter four deals with the core analytical examination ofthe impact ofthe Common Market on Burundi, the shortcomings and seeks to uncover some of the challenges. Practical issues are developed under this chapter. Chapter five provides useful deductions and conclusions from previous chapters and makes recommendations. The main finding of the study is that the Burundian government has manifested its frilly commitment to the success ofthe implementation ofthe Common Market Protocol and has made some interesting reforms. However, there remain a big number of institutional reforms to be undertaken and harmonization of laws still needed.
