Prevalence of anaemia among children under five years in Katerera Sub County, Rubirizi District
(Kampala International University, School of Health Sciences, 2014-11) Sekimuli, Ismael
Anaemia is a major public health problem in developing countries, contributing significantly to morbidity and mortality in children under five years of age. It is considered to be a major public health problem with prevalence of 67%, equivalent to 83.5 million children in Sub Saharan Africa. Anaemia is one of the largest killers of children admitted to hospitals in Sub-Saharan Africa. Even where blood transfusions are available there is a significant case fatality rate of 6-18%. According to the 2000-01 Uganda Demographic Health Survey (UDHS), the prevalence of anemia in Uganda was 64% among children <5, similar to other countries in the region. This study was aimed at determining the prevalence of anaemia, associated factors as well as the severity of anaemia among children under five years in Katerera Sub County, Rubirizi district. A community based cross-sectional study using both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection was used on 85 subjects. Random sampling method was used for selecting sample size and data presented and analyzed using word and excel Microsoft programmes. This study revealed that the prevalence of anaemia among children under five years in Katerera sub-county is high (30.6%), mild anaemia is responsible for 11.8%, moderate anaemia 16.5% and severe anaemia for 2.4%. Hence there is need for different stake holders to design appropriate measures to address the problem
