- ItemLearners’ background characteristics and retention in school. a case study of Amagoro Division, Teso North District in Kenya(Kampala International University,College of Education, 2010-12) Wekesa, Khaemba AggreyThis descriptive study set out to investigate the factors both within school and home, which were responsible for children dropping out of school. The study was conducted in selected primary schools of Amagoro division, Teso North district in Kenya. The variables studied included societal beliefs and values which pushed learners out of school, the income status of children’s parents and the school based factors such as the learning context and the environment. A semi- structural questionnaire as formulated for the purpose of collecting data from the respondents. Findings showed that teachers played a major role in learners dropping out of school. It was established that some pupils had to feed theirfamilies during school time and therefore end up dropping of school. The study lastly recommended that government intervenes by developing remedial programs for working children, strengthens up child protection policies and sensitizes teachers about harassment of pupils.
