    Prevalence of complications and risk factors among diabetic patients in medical ward of Ishaka Adventist hospital-Bushenyi

    Diabetes Mellitus affects more than 30 million people worldwide. It is said to be the fourth or fifth leading cause of death in most developed countries, newly industrialized nations and is epidemic in many developing countries. The objective of the study was to determine the prevalence risk factors and complication among patients with diabetes mellitus seen in medical ward department at Ishaka Adventist Hospital A cross sectional study descriptive in nature was employed. A cluster sampling method was used to select participants into the study. A total of 20 patients were interviewed using a structured self administered questionnaire and data from the Hospital records. Results obtained showed the prevalence of DM is higher in people 40 years of age and above compared with its prevalence in people below 40years of age. Obesity and overweight are threats to health of majority of people especially women and they are more affected than their men. Type II diabetes mellitus is more common among patients than type I. Hypertension is more common among patients with diabetes mellitus than other complications It was concluded that government and other health agencies should make health policy to include non-communicable diseases among the priority diseases in Uganda.
