- ItemEffect of school foundation board on academic performance of pupils in oluko sub county primary schools, Arua district, west Nile region Uganda(Kampala International University,College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2015-09) Awany, StephenThe study on The Effect of School Foundation Board (S.F.B) on Academic Performance in Oluko Sub County Primary Schools (2008 - 2010) has come timely to shade light misunderstanding of the role of school foundation boards on primary school. This is because the role of school foundation boards has continued not to be clearly understood by many _ parents, teachers, opinion leaders and school administration. The specific objectives of the study were to examine the roles of school foundation boards, to examine the factors that affect the level of academic performance in schools and to establish the relationship between school foundation board and academic performance in schools. The study employed a descriptive method where qualitative approach was mainly used. The researcher chose purposive, convenient and snow ball sampling techniques for the study. This comprised of teachers, parents, opinion leaders totaling to 60 drawn from 8 parishes within Oluko Sub County. Data collected through interview guide and questionnaires was coded, classified and analyzed using special package for social sciences (SPSS) and Microsoft (MS) excel where data were presented in simple percentages, graphical for easy and comparisons of opinions. The findings of the study revealed that school foundation board actually has effect on academic performance of children in primary schools. For instance; the school foundation boards develop and implement policies and goals, budgeting, distribution of funds and determine investment needs of the school. It was established knowledge that the role of foundation boards is not well perceived in primary schools in Oluko Sub County. This imply that the Sub County has not done much to sensitize the locals about policy guidelines and programs of role of foundation boards and other stakeholders in running schools in Oluko Sub County. The researcher highly recommends that the• Church, Sub County local authority. and District Education department should champion a holistic campaign to sensitize and monitor the role of foundation boards and other stakeholders in managing primary schools.
- ItemEffects of child labor on the academic performance of Primary school pupils in Jinja district, Buwenge Sub County(Kampala International University, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2019-04) Sauya, NankomaThe purpose of the study was to identify the effects of child labour on the academic performance of primary school children. The study was conducted in selected primary schools in Buwenge Sub County Jinja District Eastern Uganda. The General Objectives of the Study was to; establish the effects of child labour on the academic performance of primary school children in Jinja district Buwenge Sub County and the Research Objectives were; to find out the effects of child labour on the academic performance of primary school children in Jinja district Buwenge Sub County. To find out the effect of child labour on primary school children’s assessments grades in Jinja district Buwenge Sub County. To find out the relationship between child labour and academic performance in primary schools of Jinja district Buwenge Sub County. The researcher employed the simple random sampling technique during the research when she selected the sample size of the research and here she employed both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection. The finding indicated that both male and females were respondents with the percentage of 100 this is true because pupils and parents and head teachers were interviewed. The researcher used both descriptive and analytical research designs. The research designs were appropriate because data was easily analyzed using frequency counts and percentage derived from the responses obtained in the questionnaires. From the study, it’s clear that majority of school going children are agents of child labour and academic performance was affected due poor turn up and incomplete homework assignments from pupils. In conclusion, Although high numbers of children from poor families are joining economic activities as workers and continue to be exposed to various worst forms of child labour, the greatest challenge lays in unfolding its often invisible or disguised traits which make it tolerable and widely accepted within local communities.
- ItemEffects of child labor on the academic performance of pupils in primary Schools in Kampala District: case study of Pit Hill Primary School, Kawempe Division(Kampala International University; College of Humanities and Social Science, 2015-06) Sekimuli, HamuzaThis research was conducted at PIT HILL Primary School Located In Kawempe Mbogo, Flao Zone in Kawempe Division, Kampala District on the topic, the effects of child labor on the academic performance of pupils in primary schools in Kampala .The research was based on the four objects which included ; finding out the effects of child labor on the academic performance of pupils in primary schools, finding out the existing policies that can be implemented by major stakeholders in addressing child labor, finding out possible problems faced by the major stake holders, and escalating possible measures of improving the academic performance of pupils in primary schools. The study established that ; public sensitization on child labor, exposing negative effects of child labor on the academic performance of pupils in primary schools, holding talk shows against child labor, establishing laws against child labor acts in Uganda can help bring down the challenge of child labor. Regarding findings, the information collected through questionnaires permitted the researcher to interpret and analyses the findings. The researcher distributed a number of questionnaires and all were returned dully filled. This was 100 percent which makes the research results valid. Conclusively the government should examine ways of ensuring on measures to address child labor so as to improve on the academic performance of pupils in primary schools. The researcher recommends, primary schools should not hesitate in trying all measures to bring down all obstacles to the hindrance of the academic performance of pupils in primary schools in Kampala. This should be done in collaboration with parents, community leaders and major stake holders in the government in fighting child labor.
- ItemEffects of drug abuse on academic performance of students’ in selected Senior Secondary schools in Ngora town council, Ngora District,Eastern Uganda(Kampala International University, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2017-10) Deborah, AmonginThe purpose of the study was to examine the effects of drug abuse on academic performance. The study was conducted in selected senior secondary schools in Ngora Town Council, Ngora district, Eastern Uganda. The objectives of the study were; To find out the different causes perpetuations of drug abuse among students of the Ngora Girls and Ngora Parents Senior Secondary Schools; To identify the different forms of drugs abused by students of Ngora Girls and Ngora Parents Senior Secondary Schools; To assess the impacts of drug abuse on academic performance of the students in Ngora Girls and Ngora Parents Senior Secondary Schools and to suggest the possible strategies of curbing drug abuse among students of Ngora Girls and Ngora Parents Senior Secondary Schools. The researcher employed the some discussions from the different authors, publications, magazines and all the other possible sources as the basic foundation ofthe research. The researcher employed the simple random sampling technique during the research when she selected the sample size of the research and here she employed both the qualitative and quantitative method of data collection. The findings indicated that both male and female were respondents with the percentage of 100 this is true because Ngora Girls and Ngora Parents Senior Secondary schools were both interviewed. It also showered that the sampled size had the majority of the respondents with age brackets of 16-19 year and of course the students. The researcher used both descriptive and analytical research designs. The research designs were appropriate because data was easily analyzed using frequency counts and percentage derived from the responses obtained in the questionnaires. From the study, it is clear that there is great demand for avoidance of drug abuse so as to save most families from break up, poverty levels, child negligence, and child school dropout. Increases chronicle diseases, leads to early marriage, low levels of education, high school dropouts, increased death rates, increased rate of ignorance, family neglect, poverty, family breakdown. In conclusion, although the problem of drugs may seem impossible to eliminate, there are concrete steps that can be taken to weaken the hold of drugs on society. The danger from drugs is too great to ignore for us and our children. Recommendations, to address all aspects of drug abuse and its harmful consequences, research program ranges from basic studies of the addicted brain and behavior to health services research. NIDA’s research program develops prevention and treatment approaches and ensures they work in real-world settings. In this context, Government is strongly committed to developing a research portfolio that addresses the special vulnerabilities and disparities that exist.
- ItemFemale genital mutilation and academic performance of the girl child in Benet Sub County Kween District Uganda(Kampala International University, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2015-07) Musobya, IddiThe purpose of the study was to establish the effects of Female Genital Mutilation on girl child education. With the following objectives; to establish the effects ofFemale Genital Mutilation on examination grades of female pupils in final examination in Benet sub-county, to find out the effects of Female Genital Mutilation on school attendance of female pupils in Benet sub-county, to establish the impact of Female Genital Mutilation on school enrolment /drop out in Benet sub — county. The study answered the following questions; What are the effects of FGM on examination grades of female pupils in final examination in Benet sub-county?, What is the impact of FGM on school enrolment /drop out in Benet Sub-county? And How has FGM affected school attendance of female pupils in Benet sub —county? Benet sub county has an overall population of 1 1,314 people in accordance to the population Census carried out in 2014 where by only girls constitutes to a population of 4,107 both school going and out of school girls there for, since the population was big, the researcher intended to use the sample size of only 50 members involved 30 students, 10 teachers and 10 community members. However, the whole population could not be used to get information due to inadequate resources, thus a sample of nine schools was considered appropriate to carry out. The sample was also cut across different age groups of population thus the school going girls, women and teachers. In line with the findings, table shows that 80% respondents agree that term contributes to high poverty levels among families therefore, the government of Uganda should put more effort together with the NGO’s in sensitizing more about the dangers of FGM and in effect so that people just eliminate it. Table 11 shows that illiteracy among talents contributes 48% in being an obstacle to the elimination as female Genitor mutilation in Benet as also said by the respondents therefore government should create more awareness and also encourage parents to take their daughters and sons to schools, so that they get more knowledge about how to erase the practice per their good life. Basing on the actual study findings of the study, it can certainly be concluded that FGM highly contributes to poverty in families as per the table it contributes up to 80% illiteracy amongst parents also contribute to being an obstacle to FGM stoppage as it constitutes 48% and culture which goes up to 68%. Therefore, the practice still exists in up countries though others do it hiding and many young girls are still experiencing the pain which serves no gain in their lives except affecting their physical, mental and psychological stands as witnessed from the findings.
