- ItemProlonged conflicts and women's socio-economic development: A case study of Goma-DRC(College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2014-09) Masika, Muvuya RachelThe research on "the impact of prolonged conflicts on women's socio-economic development" was conducted in Goma-DRC The research was conducted in line with the research objectives which included; finding out the impact of prolonged conflicts on women's socio-economic development in Goma-DRC; establishing the roots causes of conflicts in DRC; and finding out the post war intervention strategies needed to foster women's socio-economic development in Goma-DRC,- On the impact of prolonged conflicts on women's socio-economic development in Goma-DRC, DRC, the findings reveal that; destruction of infrastructures, discouragement of investment, loss of lives and injuries, and loss of properties. On establishing the roots causes of conflicts in DRC, the findings reveal that; unfair allocation of positions, rampant corruption, competition for Oil, and religious differences On the post war intervention strategies needed to foster women's socioeconomic development in Goma-DRC, DRC, the findings revealed that; civic education, Gender balance in employment, Offer free education to women, Enact tougher laws on women's rights abuse. The researcher concluded that prolonged conflicts have indeed disrupted women's development initiatives in Goma-DRC. The researcher then recommended that development programmes be undertaken by the government, women be empowered, among other recommendations
- ItemDivorce and child neglect among single parents in Mukono district: A Case study of Nakisunga Sub County(College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2015-03) Namusoke, DianaThis study sought to examine the causes of divorce and child neglect among single parents in Nakisunga Sub county, Mukono district. The study intended to find out the major cause of divorce and child neglect, examine the effects of divorce and child neglect among people and to identify the possible solutions to alleviate divorce and child neglect. The study also based on the already existing literature concerning divorce and child neglect among single parents in rural society. Under this, the study consulted the existing causes (poverty, drug abuse), effects (poor growth and development trauma and psychological problem and strategies taken to curb the problem included government policy and community sensitization. The study used the descriptive study design and both qualitative and quantitative methods were used to collect data such as interviews, observation and questionnaires. The sample size was 90 respondents which included 20 community leaders (LCI and LCII) 20 parents and 50 children. Data was analyzed using tables, graphs and pie charts. The findings revealed that divorce and -child neglect among single parents is due to poverty, drug and alcohol abuse, lack of social support, domestic violence and poor parenting styles, all the above causes have an impact on the social development of a child. It is recommended that the community should be actively involved in the decision making at any activity carried out by the government, church and civil society, the community should be educated on the- need to support the neglected children and single parents, The Ministry of Health should educate the community on family planning issues and the need to have safe sex
- ItemThe contribution of women emancipation to socio-economic development in Uganda: A case study of Kanungu district(College of Humanities and Social Sciences, 2014-10) Ankunda, MariamThe research on "the contribution of women emancipation to the socio-economic development" was carried out in Kanungu district, central region Uganda. The research involved 100 respondents, of which 61% were women. The research was however guided by research objectives. Objective one sought to find out how women emancipation brought socio-economic development in Kanungu district, Uganda. It was however found that; increase in women representation, increased women employment, increased investments, education of women, and wide tax base. Research objective two sought to find out the causes of women marginalization in it was found that; lack of education, traditional belief of women inferiority, dominance by men, and Poor government policy on women were the responses given by the respondents. be promoted to foster socio-economic change in it was found that; civic Research objective three sought to find out how women emancipation can education, gender balance in employment, offer free education to women and enact tougher laws on women's rights abuse were the responses given by the respondents. The researcher concluded that women's emancipation be give priority in all levels in since it is key to socio-economic development. Recommendations were then made after presenting and interpreting the data.
- ItemAn assessment of the effects of Sexual harassment on the performance of female students in tertiary institutions: a case study of Busoga University(Kampala International University.College of Humanities and social science, 2008-07) Rebecca, TumulindeThe study investigated the effects of sexual harassment on the performance of female students in tertiary institutions, a case study of Busoga University. It also investigated the prevalence of sexual harassment, emotional reactions of victims of sexual harassment, their attitudes towards sexually harassing behavior. The subjects included 50 university students from Busoga University ranging from first year to fourth year of study. The study mainly focused on year 2005 to 2008. The subjects included 40 females and 10 males. All respondents ranged from 19 to 27 years of age. The study was handled through a survey design. A questionnaire was used in collecting data, which was later frequenced for analysis. Generally, 75% of the females subjects reported having been sexually harassed. The emotional reactions to various sexually harassing behaviors were predominantly anger and upset and there were no significant differences between groups regarding their emotional reactions. Sexual harassment has got various effects on the performance of female students in tertiary institutions. Some of these effects include low self esteem, lack of concentration, low achievement in academic work and other psychological effects on the victim. There is there fore a need for a mass sensitization programme about the nature and effects of sexual harassment to both males and females. Assertive training about the dangers of sexual harassment should be provided in institutions of learning including schools. Also management in tertiary institutions must provide channels through which information Vlll regarding sexual harassment can be received in such away that victims are not threatened by relation. Rules and consequences must be spelt out clearly and culprits must be brought to justice when proved guilty to discourage the growth of this undesirable behaviour.
- ItemAssessing the challenges of marriage break down in families: case study of Kitoro Division Entebbe municipality Wakiso District(Kampala International University.College of Humanities and social science, 2008-08) Joyce, Ayo OgwalThe study was carried out in Wakiso, considering Kitoro in division B Entebbe municipality. Main purpose of the study was to identify marriage breakdown as an outstanding challenges in families in Wakiso. The researcher also wanted to know more about the view of the public on marriage breakdown which has been rampant today especially due to unemployment and poverty very many families have broken down. For example when Uganda airlines was closed very many families in Entebbe broke up because of unemployment. Of such reasons that the researcher had to go and identify the nature of marriage breakdown and its challenges in Entebbe, an assessment was made so as to come up with measures to help in marriage breakdown in Entebbe such as to educating the public about the exciting legal frame works regarding the prevention and reduction of marriage breakdown in Entebbe. The study also considered using both qualitative. Data was collected through personal interviews using a structured questionnaire which include 76 respondents who help in providing the primary data, in depth interviews were held with parents who have faced the problem of marriage breakdown in Entebbe municipality. Questionnaires administered to respondents were verified edited and coded, Row frequencies were generated to produced descriptive data. However, because of limited time the researcher was not able to use a bigger sample size, it's therefore recommended that future researcher should use a larger sample size so as to come up with a better analysis of impact of marriage breakdown in Entebbe. There are still some weaknesses in enforcement of laws corning marriage breakdowns therefore there is need to strengthen the legislation framework Entebbe municipality that will help in dealing in marriage breakdown cases.
