- ItemAssessing the Effects of Alcohol on the Families of the Community Surrounding Rukungiri Health Centre Iv(Kampala international international : School of Health Sciences, 2017-08) Ahabwe, Jonnat1.1 Background of the study: The Global Status Report (2008) revealed that disease burdened as measured by disability adjusted life years (DALYS) attributed to alcohol and drug use as being the significantly higher in America and Europe .However , the overall disease burden attributable to alcoholism is not insignicant and evidence suggests that alcohol related problems will continue more to the overall disease burden over time Objectives: The general objective of the study is to assess the effects of alcohol on the families and community surrounding Rukungiri health Centre IV Rukungiri District. However there are specific objectives for example: To establish whether poverty is due to alcohol on the families and community surrounding Rukungiri Health Centre IV Rukungiri District, Methods: Quantitative data from the questionnaire was analyzed by using Microsoft Excel, by use of figures, and tables while qualitative data was analyzed through coding, describing and relating with the findings. All the above data was interpreted to give meaningful information Results: According to the results from the table; Majority of the respondents were males 40(83%) and least respondents were females 8(17%). Majority of the respondents were aged between 27- 40 (52%) and least were aged between 18-26(6%). Majority of the respondents were married 35(73%) and the least were the divorced 2(4%). Majority of the respondents stopped at primary level 20(42%) and the least respondents didn’t go to the University 0(0%). Majority of the respondents were peasants 33(69%) and the least were the unemployed 2(4%). Most respondents were from catholic religion 24(50%) and the least ere other religions (Muslims and Protestants). Conclusion: The study sought to assess the effects of alcohol consumption / abuse on family and communities.
- ItemFactors Contributing To High Alcoholism among Youth in Adumi Village, Arua District(Kampala international international : School of Health Sciences, 2018-04) Kamanyire, RogersThis study was conducted at Adumi village Arua district about factors that contribute to alcoholism among youth. Youth aged 16 to 17 have the second highest rate (16.4%) of current alcohol abuse in the surveyed countries, and although consumption of alcoholic beverages is illegal for people under 21 years of age, 10.4 million current drinkers are aged 12 to 20 and of this group, nearly half 5.1 million engage in binge drinking, including 2.3 million who would also be classified as heavy drinkers The study used a descriptive research design with both qualitative and quantitative methods. A sample of 50 respondents was sampled using questionnaires. The data was collected and analyzed using Microsoft excel, then presented using tables and figures. The major factors contributing to alcoholism among the youth in Adumi village were found to be, lack of full time employment leading to idleness of the youth, Peer group influence, easy accessibility, availability and affordability of alcohol in Adumi village without any restrictions, Physical and emotional stress resulting from poor conditions of living leading to psychiatric conditions such as anxiety and depression, Chaotic home environments and child negligence leading to school dropouts, Lack of information about the disadvantages of alcoholism from the community development officers and policies to prevent the vice in the study area and the district at large. The government and other stakeholders such as NGOs and CBOs should establish youth livelihood programs to combat idleness among the youth and should put in place bylaws on the time of opening bars and also the age of people allowed to drink and make sure that these bylaws are strictly enforced.
- ItemFactors influencing youth to alcoholism in Ishaka Division Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality(Kampala International University, School of Health Sciences, 2016-10) Magezi, SolomonAlcohol abuse and alcohol dependence among the youth has become a global burden hindering development, imparting high expenditures on treatment and counseling the victims of alcoholism as well as the accelerated domestic violence and its effects. Uganda in general and Bushenyi Ishaka in particular alcohol constitutes an important role for road traffic accidents and other related crimes. To assess the factors influencing the youth to alcoholism, descriptive cross sectional study design quantitative in nature was carried out. Using convenience sampling a total of 96 respondents were recruited into the study and all of the 96 questionnaires were returned completely filled. Majority (71%) strongly agreed that social deprivation was a leading cause of alcoholism among the youth. Other identified risks included personal characteristics (73%), mental problems (63%) and peer influence and exposure being supported by 67.7% to be a contributor to alcoholism among youth. It is recommended that controlling advertisements through the media, hiking prices for alcoholic drinks and putting laws governing alcohol consumption among the youth would reduce the trend
