- ItemAcademic achievement of pupils with hearing impairment in inclusive education:a case study of St. johns senior secondary school-Nyabwjna Sheema District(Kampala International University,College of Education, 2018-07) Nyesiga, BruceBasically, Inclusive Education (IE) means educating learners with special educational needs in regular education settings. However, IE is not limited to only placement. Rather, it means facilitating education of pupils with Hearing impairment with a whole suite of provisions which include curriculum adaptation, adapted teaching methods, modified assessment techniques, and accessibility arrangements. In short, inclusive education is a multi-component strategy or, perhaps, a mega-strategy (Odom, et al., 2011).
- ItemThe academic and social challenges affecting learners with epilepsy in inclusive setting in Nthongoni zone, Kibwezi district Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education Open and Distance Learning, 2011-08) Maundu, Reuben MbwikoThe central problem of the study was born out of the fact that despite epilepsy being a disease like others and that an epileptic child may have normal intelligence, many teachers and society know little or nothing about it and therefore have negative attitude towards these children Factors leading to negative perception and discrimination of epileptic children have not been fully investigated and understood. The purpose of this study was therefore out the teachers' understanding of epilepsy in inclusive schools. The study was done in selected primary schools in the area and covered a sample of 25 teachers, both ale and female from five schools. The researcher sampled schools using convenient sampling technique. Data was collected by means of questionnaires and was analyzed using descriptive statistics in form of tables. From the findings of the study it revealed that most schools do not have any specially trained teachers to handle children with special educational needs, some teachers still have negative attitude towards epileptic children, no remedial classes to help these children cover the tie lost during attacks and sometimes hospitalization and limited funds allocated to special needs departments in regular schools which are moreover diverted to other uses among other challenges. Based on the above findings it was recommended that: Emphasis should be put on the persons abilities rather than focusing on the negative impact of their seizures. Medical care needs to go hand in hand with the support from all stakeholders, Special needs teachers should put in practice what they learnt and sensitize their regular colleagues on the need to help children with special needs, Train more teachers in special needs education to help them acquire more skills to handle all children irrespective of varying abilities, Organize more seminars/workshops to sensitize. head teachers, teachers, ordinary learners in schools/class and the entire community, the government should increase budgetary allocations to special needs education department to motivate teachers and other persons working with/for persons with special needs, special needs teachers should be given in-service courses regularly to refresh their minds. This would give X abilities to love, guide and support all learners in their classes and the Ministry of education should work hand in hand with the media in creating awareness to the society so as to change the negative perception towards learners with special needs. This can be through the media like radios , newspapers, television, videos and magazines among others .

- ItemAcademic performance of hearing impaired learners in an intergrated setting in Kapchorwa town council Kapchorwa district(Kampala International University, Institute of Open and Distance Learning, 2009-11) Chelimo, Betty SyliviaThis study set out to determine the impact of integration on the academic performance of learners with hearing impairment using three primary schools of Kapcharwa demonstration school, Kpchorwa primary school and Elgon primary school, all in Kapchorwa Town Council Schools. The study employed a descriptive comparative research design. Random sampling was used to select 99 pupils and the student's samples t-test was used to compare test results of the learners with HI and those who were normal. The findings showed that over 8% of learners in the sampled schools had hearing problems, 6% had physical disability and majorities (86%) were normal. The study also found out that the mean scores of learners with hearing impairment and normal pupils significantly differed in all subjects except in mathematics. This indicated by significant P- values for all subjects except mathematics i.e. English (P = 000), math's (P = 0.243), social studies (P =000) and science (P =002). The researcher concluded that the number of hearing impaired learners, although small (8%), is enough to call for special attention to cater for their problems, the academic performance of learners with hearing impairment significantly differs from that of normal learners if taught together, with hearing-impaired learners having the worst scores. Therefore integration of hearing-impaired learners with normal learners negatively affects their (HI) academic performance in terms of scores. The researcher recommended that the government, school administration and teachers should make special arrangements for hearing impaired learners because their number is relatively big to be neglected. The researcher further recommended that. hearing impaired learners should be taught from their special classes, since integrating them with normal learners negatively affect their performance.

- ItemAcademic performance of Human Immune Deficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome of infected learners in primary schools in Matungu division, Kenya(Kampala International University, College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2009-08) Majoni Wanzala, TobiasThe study recounted the academic performance of orphaned children affected by Human immune deficiency virus/ Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/ AIDS) in regular primary schools in Matungu division. The writer used quantitative approach, design used was case study. The population was all schools in Matungu division. The sampled schools are 5 primary schools and convenient sampling was used to pick the schools, systematic sampling was used to get her respondents. The instruments used in data collection were questionnaires sent out to teachers of the sampled primary schools. They were later collected when completed. The research findings revealed that the orphaned children affected by Human Immunodeficiency Virus/ Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (HIV/ AIDS) enrolled for regular primary schools but were unable to complete their full primary education due to many problems that they encountered. Some involved in domestic chor.es and others drop out from school to take care of their sick parents that are infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus/ Acquired [mmuno deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS) subsequently exposing them to brutal and inhumane life as they struggle to work a living. As they care for their sick parents there is increased risk of contracting the deadly virus. Most of the girls orphaned children dropped out of school when they have missed school a number of times. They end up being made to repeat classes so as to improve their performance. The community as a whole neglects the rights of affected children. A few cultural practices like circumcision and early marriages are roles played by the community. Such practices negatively affect the orphaned children education. Teachers also used methods, which hardly accommodated all learners' needs hence, leading to poor performance and dropouts by orphaned children affected by Human immunodeficiency virus/ Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS). The writer finally recommended that there should be frequent guidance and counseling sessions in regular primary schools.
- ItemAcademic performance of learners with hearing impairments in inclusive primary school Kasarani Division Nairobi-Kenya(Kampala International University. College of Education, Open and Distance Learning, 2008-08) Ndei, Lucy NgeniaThe aim of the study was to investigate factors affecting academic performance of learners with hearing impairments in inclusive primary school Kasarani Division, Nairobi province. The research used quantitative approach and survey design. She used twenty regular teachers from division. She targeted at four teachers from every school selected. The total numbers of schools selected were five out of the twenty five inclusive primary schools in Kasarani division. A questionnaire was used and filled as required by the respondents. The findings indicated the performance of learners with hearing impairments in inclusive primary schools is affected negatively. It may be affected by the negative attitude held by regular teachers towards learners with hearing impairments. Regular teachers may also lack skills and knowledge of the impairment and how to strategize on intervention. These are: - no hearing equipments and materials to help the affected learners. Schools are also located in noise prone areas e.g. near roads. For learners with hearing problem to benefit from inclusive primary schools, then there is need to create awareness to parents and teachers on the causes and prevention of the disability. Teachers and the rest of the public should be advised on the dangers caused by hambering negative attitude towards learners with special needs. Pre and in-service courses should be advocated for teachers without special training. Schools should be allocated in conducive areas. The learners should be kept in his/her preferential area like near the source of sound and facing the speaker. Adjustments should be made in schools to accommodate learners with hearing impairments. Equipments and materials should be availed in inclusive setting to assist learners in their learning. When the above is followed, then learners with hearing impairments will benefit and will perform to as normal learners as possible.
- ItemAcademic performance of learners with visual impairments in Kipsaraman zone, Baringo district Kenya(Kampala International University, school of education, 2008-08) J\ Chelal, John stone C.This study set out to explore the academic performance of learners with visual impairments in kipsaraman zone, Baringo district Kenya. The research followed a survey research design. The research targeted a small population of 10 pupils and 10 teachers from the ten schools in the zone to represent the nineteen schools. The target sample was picked using purposive and random sampling. The schools sampled included: Bartolimo, Kitibei, Kipsaraman, Kimugul, Chambai, Barkebo, Kasok Kibiriokwonin, Kaptoin, Torokwonin, kelwondonin, Kapchepkisa and Kabargoge in the highland region. The schools in the lower region included: Poi, Rebeko, Terik, Kabbilany, Mondoi and Kapkoiwo. The questionnaires were analyzed manually and percentages computed then frequency tables were used to summarize the information. The study discovered that the major causes of V.1 among children in the school going age are diseases like —Glaucoma, Cataract and exophthalmia and others. These diseases contribute to 60% of V.1 cases among children. Other causes of V.1 are accidents, heredity etc. The study also discovered that most (70%) of the LVL perform poorly. It is only a few (30%) who can perform averagely. All respondents showed that if LVL are provided with teaching learning resources, their performance can be improved, The study also found out that there are few trained SNE teachers and so there a big need for them . In this study, the researcher also discovered that about 80% of the people in the Villages, teachers and other pupils, generally have a negative attitude towards LVL. The study concluded that there are many causes of\~.1 among children, but diseases are the biggest cause. LVL perform generally poor in most schools. This is due to negative attitude most people, including teachers and fellow pupils have towards LVL. Most people have a poor attitude towards LVL, there are few SNE trained teachers and GCP are still inadequate in most schools. The researcher recommends that, the government should put up preventive measures to reduce the spread of diseases like Glaucoma, Cataracts, Xerophthalmia among others. Parents should also be more careluil in up bringing their children so that they are not easily attacked by such disease. Such measures may include immunization programmes, provision of good food that can improve pupil’s sight and early control and treatment of the diseases, in case it is discovered. The ministry of education needs to do something to boost academic performance of LVL. This can be done through provision of more SNE trained teachers, more teaching and learning resources like eye glasses for shortsighted and longsighted. Parents, schools, and the ministry of education should conduct more guidance and counseling sessions to try and encourage LVL to learn.
