Abstract
The study examined the effects of domestic violence on learners' performance in Kolir SubCounty,
Bukedea district. The sample for the study consisted of 50 respondents randomly drawn
from the twelve (12) schools of Kolir Sub-County. Data were collected with a questionnaire and
interview guides. The data collected was subjected to statistical analysis using the Statistical
Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) method that helped in effective analysis of data. The results
indicated among Several causes of domestic violence have been identified and among others
include; verbal alteration, financial constraints and school related reasons,socio-economic
reasons like family earnings ,polygamy among others .Such causes have affected the
performance of learners as domestic violence prevails in families. Government and other
stakeholders should work closely to ensure that these children are safeguarded from such causes
in order to see them continue with their academics just like any other child in the society, a
number of effects have been cited among others include: Negative feelings (withdrawal, learning
problems), depression, deviant behaviors, behavioral/emotional disturbance. These effects have
either a long or short term effect in learners hence lowering the performance of the learners
academically.
It was recommended that the parents should ensure that their children should go to school in time
and timely payment of tuition and basic needs i·equired from school. They should reduce the
tendency of violating the rights of by providing learners with enough scholastic materials to ease
the learning as this improves their academic standard s. The law should be seen in action in order
to rescue the lives of children who are being abused as that serves like learning ground for the
abusers in society. The political/teachers should play their parts in ensuring the safety of
learners both at school and the community. This may result in quality output obtained.
