Abstract
This research report was to investigate on poor performance in English language among ECDE children in Gatunga zone of Tharaka District in Eastern province. It was guided by the following objective to examine the effects of poor performance in English on learners' education and to establish the strategies put in place to curb poor English performance in schools. The data collection tools used were interview schedules and questionnaires. The researcher discovered the following a major cause of poor performance in English subject among ECDE children in Gatunga zone is lack of motivation on the side of teachers. Also strategies put in place to curb poor English performance in schools in Gatunga of Tharaka District included adaptation of refresher courses to teachers of English. Major recommendations of the research are: to the teachers should always be referring to the syllabus and not textbooks create more time for English and for remedial teaching. To the learners, they should have good interaction with their teachers is as to create conducive environment for learning. The parents to provide books needed by their children such as story books which are good in improving the reading and working. The government should find a way of ensuring that the teachers are understaffed in schools. These ensure syllabus is covered at the right time.
